Happy Birthday today to Ryleigh Willcutt and Blayne McFerren.

On this date in 1999, an 18-month-old baby girl fell off a suspension bridge in Vancouver, Canada and fell 230 feet to a rocky ledge below.  The rescue team that descended into the canyon to retrieve her little body found her alive and crying.  She survived the 230-foot fall with some bruises but no broken bones or serious injury.  Doctors who examined her called it a miracle.  Today let’s celebrate God’s love and protection.

On today’s date in 1893, Frank Duryea took what is believed to be the first gasoline-powered automobile for a test drive.  That first drive went for about 600 yards down Frank’s street in Springfield, Massachusetts before the transmission broke.

On today’s date in 1913, a self-taught American amateur, 20-year-old Francis Ouimet, won a three-way playoff and the U.S. Open Golf Tournament held at The Country Club in Brookline, MA.  You may have seen his story in the movie, The Greatest Game Ever Played.

On today’s date in 1787, the Constitution of the United States was signed by delegates from 12 states at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.  The United States Constitution is the oldest working constitution in the world.

On today’s date in 1602, the Mayflower, with 102 passengers aboard, departed from Plymouth, England headed for the New World.  The voyage across the Atlantic would take over three months, as the little ship would arrive at the location we know as Plymouth Rock on the coast of Massachusetts on December 26 of that year.

On today’s date in 1928, Scottish doctor Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic.  Alexander Fleming grew up in a very poor family but was able to get an education through scholarships paid for by the family of a boy his father had rescued from a peat bog…which is like quicksand.  Since 1928, many people who would have otherwise died from infection have been saved by penicillin – one of whom was Sir Winston Churchill, who was the Prime Minister of England who rallied his nation to resist the attack by Nazi Germany during World War II.  And it was Winston Churchill who as a boy had been rescued by Mr. Fleming from the peat bog and whose family had paid for Alexander Fleming to become a doctor.

On today’s date in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem which was later set to music and became the song we know as The Star-Spangled Banner – our National Anthem.  His poem, “The Defence of Fort McHenry,” was written as he watched the fort being bombarded by British warships during the War of 1812.

Tomorrow is Patriot Day and a Day of Remembrance.  On tomorrow’s date in 2001, four airliners were hijacked in the United States and intentionally crashed.  Two of the planes hit New York City’s World Trade Center twin towers, which collapsed shortly afterward.  Another plane hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

On this day in 31 B.C., following the death of Julius Caesar, the Roman leader Octavian defeated the armies of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.  Octavian then changed his name to Augustus Caesar and was the emperor in Luke Chapter 2 who decreed that all the world should be taxed and led to Joseph and Mary going to Bethlehem because Joseph was of the house and lineage of David.

On this day in 1875, British steamship captain Matthew Webb became the first person to swim across the English Channel.  He trained for two years to prepare for his attempt, and successfully made the crossing from Dover, England to the coast of France in 21 hours and 45 minutes.

On this day in 1456, the printing of the Gutenberg Bible was completed. Only 180 Bibles were printed, which would seem like a small run until you consider that the total number of books in all of Europe in 1456 was only about 30,000.  Of the original 180, fewer than 25 complete Bibles exist today.

Middle school baseball assessments continue tonight from 6:00-8:00 pm.

There will be sign-up sheets for Cross-Country in the high school hall and in the main office this week for anyone wanting to run cross-country this year.  If you are interested, make sure you get your name on a sign-up sheet.

School Pictures will be taken tomorrow.  Pictures for grades 7-11 will be through Bible classes.  These pictures will be used in the yearbook, so you must be in school uniform.

This past June, Cavalier junior Lane Mangum lost his life in a boating accident while fishing on Lake Bistineau.  Today would have been Lane’s sixteenth birthday.  Please observe a moment of silence to remember Lane.
