Today is Thursday, November 16. 

Happy Birthday today to Roderick Harris and Michael Williams.

On this date in 1875, a Philadelphia dentist, Dr. William Bonwell, was issued a patent for his invention – a mallet used to hammer gold fillings into cavities.  Dr. Bonwell’s first patient was reported to have said “YeeeeeOWWWWW” when the mallet hit the exposed nerve of his tooth…to which Dr. Bonwell responded with the well-known comeback line, “Oops!”

Tomorrow, school will be dismissed early so that Cavalier fans can travel to New Iberia for the second-round football playoff game with Catholic High School.  Students will be dismissed at 11:30 tomorrow morning.  If you leave school earlier than 11:30, make sure that you sign-out in the main office.  All tickets for tomorrow night’s game will be $10.

Please keep our Cavalier swim team in your prayers as they continue to compete at the State Swim Meet in Sulphur today.  All our swimmers did well yesterday and are swimming again this morning.  Sarah Holt set a state record yesterday.

Best Wishes to our girls’ basketball teams as they travel to Natchitoches this evening to take on the St. Mary Tigers.  Game time is 6:00.

Today is Wednesday, November 15. 

Happy Birthday today to Anna Little and Parker Williamson.

On this date in 1806, right about now United States Army Lt. Zebulon Pike was leading a survey party across the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territory when he spotted a snow-capped mountain rising above the prairie in the distance.  The mountain, referred to by the native Ute Indians as “the long one”, would be named after Lt. Pike.  Pike’s Peak or Bust became the slogan for many wagon trains headed west in the 1800’s, and in 1883, inspired by the view from the summit, Katherine Lee Bates, a teacher at Colorado College, wrote America the Beautiful.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Cross-Country team on their success in the State Cross Country Meet at Northwestern on Monday.  Thank you for representing us well this season.  We appreciate your hard work and efforts to be excellent.

Congratulations to our girls’ varsity soccer team on their hustle and enthusiasm against Benton last night. 

Congratulations, also, to our varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball teams on their victories at Pleasant Hill last night as they opened their 2017-18 season.

Today is Tuesday, November 14.

Happy Birthday today to Luke Edgell.

On this date in 1889, a New York newspaper reporter named Nellie Bly began her attempt to travel around the world in fewer than 80 days…trying to beat the time of Jules Verne’s fictitious Englishman, Phileas Fogg.  Mrs. Bly would succeed, as she would complete her journey in January – in just over 72 days.  Like Jules Verne, she also wrote a book about her adventure, Around the World in 72 Days, which became an immediate best seller.

Congratulations to our varsity soccer teams on their victories over Southwood last night.  The girls and the boys both won.  

Congratulations, also, to our JV boys’ basketball team on their hustle and enthusiasm in their victory over Evangel yesterday.

Cowen’s Studio is here at CBA taking Christmas pictures.  All students not dressed up for Christmas and purchasing picture packets should be in regular school uniforms.

Our Cavalier Cross-Country team is in Natchitoches today to compete in the State Cross Country Meet at Northwestern this morning.  Please keep them in your prayers.

Best Wishes to our varsity basketball teams as they open their seasons by traveling to Pleasant Hill to take on the Eagles this evening.  The girls’ game will tip-off at 6:00.

Best wishes to our girls’ soccer team in their game against Benton tonight.  They will play at 6:00 at Tinsley.

Happy Birthday today to Bryan Brantly and Landry Lyddy

On this date in 1805, Johann Lehner, a butcher in Vienna, Austria invented the first hot dog.  He called his creation a frankfurter.

Congratulations to our varsity football Cavaliers on their first-round playoff victory over Holy Savior Menard last Friday night.  This week, the Cavaliers will travel south to New Iberia to take on Catholic High Friday night.

Cowen’s Studio will be on our campus tomorrow to take Christmas pictures of students interested in purchasing packets.  Students interested in purchasing pictures may dress in Christmas clothes (or Sunday clothes) for the day.  All other students will wear uniforms.

Best Wishes tonight to our varsity soccer teams in their games with Southwood.  The girls will play at 6:00, with the boys’ game scheduled to begin at 7:45.  Both games will be at Cargill.

On this date in 1908, the first Gideon Bible was put in a hotel room.  Despite challenges in recent years to block the Bibles, the Gideon organization is now in its 110th year of making Bibles available to travelers.

Best Wishes tonight to our varsity football Cavaliers as they host Holy Savior Menard in a first-round state playoff game.  Kickoff will be at 7:00.

Best Wishes tomorrow to our girls’ and boys’ soccer teams who will be playing Northwood in their Jamboree at Lee Hedges Stadium.  The girls will play at 2:40, and the boys will play at 4:00.

Best Wishes, also, to our Cavalier girls’ and boys’ basketball teams as they host their jamboree tomorrow afternoon.  The girls will begin the action at 1:00 against Loyola, and the boys will play at 1:30.  Admission will be $1 for students.  Your admission ticket will get you in for all the games.

Tomorrow is Veterans Day…the 11th day of the 11th month.  On tomorrow’s date in 1918, the Great War – now known to us as World War I – came to an end with the signing of an armistice at 11:00 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year.  Veterans Day was declared a national holiday by Congress and was originally a remembrance of the end of the Great War.  But as America fought more wars and more Americans died defending our freedom, tomorrow has become a time to remember all the wars and the sacrifices of the men and women who have served in America’s armed forces through the years.

On this date in 1938, Nazi troops destroyed stores and houses in Jewish neighborhoods throughout Germany, as they looted over 7,500 Jewish businesses and burned 267 synagogues.  91 people were killed, and over 30,000 Jews arrested in the night that became known as Kristallnacht or “Night of Broken Glass”.

On this date in 1512, Michelangelo’s paintings on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome were first exhibited to the public.  It had taken Michelangelo four years to draw and paint the more than 300 figures on the 5,000 square foot ceiling 60 feet above the floor of the chapel.

On this date in 1874, the Republican Party was for the first time symbolized as an elephant.  In the magazine, Harper’s Weekly, a political cartoonist named Thomas Nast made a satirical drawing of an elephant about to fall into a big hole – a reference to President Ulysses S. Grant’s possible bid for a 3rd presidential term.

Happy Birthday today to James Naismith.

On this date in 1986, the Dryer’s and Edy’s Ice Cream Company took out a $250,000 insurance policy to cover the taste buds of their ice cream testor, John Harrison.  Mr. Harrison was the inventor of the Cookies-n-Cream flavor, and this was the first tastebuds insurance policy ever written.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Cross-Country team on their success in the District cross country meet at Minden on Saturday.  All the Cavalier runners did well, and now prepare for the State Meet one week from tomorrow in Natchitoches.

Congratulations, also, to Andrew Otzenberger on winning the Level 3 Chick-fil-A tennis tournament in the 18’s division yesterday in Jackson, MS.

The NJHS rehearsal time has been changed.  The rehearsal will be tomorrow during 7th hour in the sanctuary.  All current members and inductees must attend.  Teachers…a list of participants has been placed in your box.

This week, winter sports get going as Cavalier soccer begins their season with a couple of scrimmages and Cavalier basketball hosts a jamboree on Saturday.

Also, the Cavalier varsity football team begins playoff action this week.  Calvary is scheduled to host Holy Savior Menard on Friday.

On this date in 1507, the husband of Lisa Gherardini commissioned artist Leonardo DaVinci to paint his wife’s portrait.  We know the painting as the Mona Lisa.

Congratulations to our Calvary Middle School girls’ basketball team on their play against Evangel yesterday.  The young Lady Cavs played with a lot of heart in their victory over the Eagles.

Congratulations, also, to our Cavalier varsity football team on their victory over North Caddo in the final game of the regular season schedule.  As of now, it looks as if Calvary will be hosting a first round playoff game next week.  We will announce the pairings as soon as they are official.

Staff members, remember that today is the teacher appreciation luncheon in the Fireside Room.

On this date in 1989, 87 year-old Carmen Fasanella retired after 68 years and 243 days of driving a taxicab in Princeton, New Jersey.  Over his career, he often drove for the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald and the actor, Jimmy Stewart, but his favorite and most frequent passenger was Albert Einstein.

Homecoming Spirit Week results are in. After adding up the scores from decorations, field games, and class dress-up participation, congratulations to our winners…for middle school:  1st place – 7th grade; 2nd place – 8th grade.  For high school:  1st place – Juniors; 2nd place – Seniors.

Today is Monday, October 30

Happy Birthday today to Joshua Purvis, Cliff Mosley, and Matthew Barnard

On this date in 1938, a radio show called “the War of the Worlds” aired on CBS Radio.  Presented by a man named Orson Welles, the show was set up as a music program interrupted by news bulletins saying that Martians had landed in a field near Princeton, New Jersey.  Although a disclaimer was broadcast several times throughout the program, most listeners did not pay attention to the announcements that said that the story was fictional, and the highways of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were jammed for hours with people trying to escape the invasion.  Thousands of people across America panicked and took measures to protect their homes from the Martians.

Congratulations to our Cavalier varsity football team on their enthusiasm and effort in the win over Mansfield last Friday night.  This week, the Cavaliers finish their regular District 1-2A season on Thursday when they host the North Caddo Rebels at Barker Stadium.

Congratulations to our Cavalier volleyball teams on their enthusiasm and effort at Loyola yesterday.   The Lady Cavs played well, but fell to the Flyers in the last game of the regular season.  We now await information about the playoffs. 

Today is Palm Tree Day.  It is also Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally Day.  For this morning’s parade, all students are to report to 2nd hour class and then be dismissed to go to the parade route.

Happy Birthday today to Benjamin Guggenheim

On this date in 1881, the Gunfight at the OK corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona, as town Marshall Virgil Earp, his brothers Morgan and Wyatt and friend Doc Holliday confronted outlaws Billy Claiborne, Ike and Billy Clanton, and Tom and Frank McLaury.  The gunfight is generally regarded as the most famous shootout in the history of the American West, but actually lasted only about 30 seconds. 

Congratulations to our Cavalier swimmers on their success at Centenary yesterday.  We do not have results yet, but will announce them when we get them. 

Today is Class Color day.  For this afternoon’s Field Day, all students are to report to 6th hour class and then be dismissed to head outside to the stadium. 

Tomorrow will be Palm Tree Day, so dress in green and gold to support the Cavaliers. The parade will begin at 9:00, to be followed by a pep rally in the gym.

Happy Birthday today to Cayden Jamison, Sarah DeMoss, and Peyton Brookshire

On this date in 1955, the first microwave oven was introduced to the world at the headquarters of the Tappan Company in Mansfield, Ohio.  The first microwaves were pretty pricey for 1955, as each carried a price tag of $1200…that would be equivalent to over $10,000 today.

Congratulations to our Cavalier volleyball teams on their hustle and enthusiasm yesterday against Evangel.  The JV was victorious over the Eagles.  Both JV and varsity teams will be in action again tomorrow at Loyola.

Congratulations, also, to our middle school Cavalier football team on a fine season.  Calvary fell to CMM last night 14-8 in a game that saw our boys play hard to the finish in true Cavalier style.

Today is Crazy Island day.  Tomorrow will be Class Color Day, so dress in your class color and get ready to compete in the Homecoming Field Day.

On this date in 1959, Wilt Chamberlain began his professional basketball record streak of consecutive games.  Not only did he play in 799 consecutive games, but he did not foul out of a single one of them.

Congratulations to our Cavalier volleyball teams on their victories yesterday at BTW.  Both the JV and varsity teams won.

Today is Roam the Seas Day.  Tomorrow will be Crazy Island day – dress like you are headed for a weather-crazy island…windblown hair, raincoat, rainboots, etc.

On this date in 1774, the new Continental Congress, the governing body of America’s colonies, passed an order that all citizens of the colonies discontinue and discourage horse racing and all kinds of games, shows, plays and other expensive diversions and entertainment.

Congratulations to our middle school Cavalier football team on their37-26 victory over Mansfield last night. Caden Flowers had a big night with two touchdown receptions and two interceptions.  Chase Stripland also had a touchdown and an interception.  The middle school boys will finish out their schedule next Tuesday when they host Caddo Middle Magnet.

Seniors, remember that your shirt money is due to Mrs. Fitzwater today. 

Remember that Homecoming is next week.  On Monday, dress like you are a tacky tourist headed to a Luau…Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses, sandals, grass skirt, etc.

Happy Birthday today to Charles Merrill

On this date in 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis formally surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, ending the American Revolutionary War.  In a display of sore loser, Cornwallis actually sent his second-in-command to deliver his sword, so American General George Washington coolly directed him to his own second-in-command, Major General Benjamin Lincoln, who accepted the token of surrender.

On this date in 1961, a famous painting by the well-known French painter, Henri Matisse went on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.  Over the next 47 days, more than 100,000 people visited the museum to view the famous painting, Le Bateau, before someone realized that it was hanging upside down.

On this date in 1933 – Dr. Albert Einstein moved to Princeton, NJ, after leaving Germany.

Congratulations to our Cavalier volleyball teams on their effort and enthusiasm against Natchitoches last night.  And congratulations to our seniors, who led the Lady Cavs through Calvary’s first varsity volleyball season.

Congratulations to our Cavalier JV football team on their perseverance at Mansfield last night.  The Cavaliers played hard until the end in true Cavalier spirit before falling to the Wolverines.

Congratulations to our Cavalier volleyball teams on their enthusiasm and play at Evangel last night.The JV was led by Breanna Walker with 19 good serves, RobiDonna Thomas with 6 kills, and Gracie Hart with 28 passes.  In varsity action, Kaylin Little, Avery Debelak and Madilyn Sells led the serving points with 14, 14 and 12.  The volleyball teams are in next in action at Calvary next Monday and Tuesday against Caddo Magnet and Loyola with JV starting at 5:30pm and varsity following.

Congratulations, also, to our Middle School Cavalier football team.  Last night, Calvary’s offensive line of Zeke Toups, Denham Smith, Drew Bickham, Landon Mayeaux, and Landon Rotharmel dominated the line of scrimmage the entire game as the young Cavaliers rolled to a 44-8 victory over our visitors from Natchitoches.

Gracie Hart had 6 kills and Audrey Baldwin 5 kills in the Calvary attack.  Breanna Walker led the targeted passes with 18.  In the varsity game, Madilyn Sells led the serving with 19.  Gussie Treadway led the attacks with 9 kills followed by Avery Debelak with 8 kills.   Kaylin Little had 17 assists. Thursday the Lady Cavs take on Evangel at 5:30pm at Evangel.

Happy Birthday today to Cody Vannoppen and Michael Fontana

On this date in 1920, the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates played the only triple header in modern baseball history.  The first game began at noon and the final out was recorded at 5:01 p.m.…three complete games in only 5 hours.  The Reds won 2 of the 3 games, enabling them to finish 3rd in the National League race and share World Series profits that year.

Congratulations to our Cavalier football team on their enthusiasm and play against Sterlington Friday night.  This week, Calvary travels across town to take on the Loyola Flyers Friday night.

Congratulations, also, to Mrs. Brookshire and our Cavalier cross-country team on their successful invitational cross-country meet on Saturday.

And congratulations to our Cavalier swimmers who competed at Centenary on Saturday.  Our girls’ relay got a 1st and 2nd place out of 14 relays.  Swimming for Calvary were:  Brennan Barber, Liberty Haase, Sarah Holt, Caroline Horne, Molly McDowell, Ben Ponder, and Josh Roper.  Between them, they made 18 state times and finished 4th overall out of 12 teams.

In varsity action, Avery Debelak led the team with 5 aces.  Jenna Fielder led the kills with 5, followed by Kaylin Little and Avery with 3 each.  Next Monday CBA Volleyball plays Byrd at Byrd.

Happy Birthday today to Claire Fletcher

On this date in 1892, the first nighttime football game took place under electric lights.  In the early days of football, it was common for a college and high school to play each other, and this first game was between Wyoming Seminary, a private college in Pennsylvania, and the High School in Mansfield, Pennsylvania.  The lighting system turned out to be inadequate, and the game itself lasted only 20 minutes.  Both sides agreed to end the game early with a 0 to 0 tie after several players had run into light poles.

Congratulations to our Calvary volleyball teams on their victories over North Caddo last night.  Breanna Walker dominated the court with 27 serve points and 17 aces.  Gracie Hart contributed 10 serve points 8 aces, and 3 kills.  Avery Debelak helped bring the varsity team back from a 11-20 deficit to go ahead 22-20 with multiple serves and aces.  Avery led the team with 20 serving points and 14 aces for a total of 34 points off serves, followed by Kaylin Little with 13 serve points and 8 aces.  Jenna Fielder and Madilyn Sells led the kills with 7 and 5 respectively.

Today is Monday, September 18.   

Happy Birthday today to Caitlyn Perser, Regan Collins, and Ellie Volden.

On this date in 1830, in response to arguments about whether a machine would ever replace natural power, a race was held between a horse and the first train locomotive built in America on a nine-mile course outside Baltimore, Maryland.  The locomotive had some mechanical difficulties, and the horse won easily, convincing most of the onlookers that the steam train would never replace the wagon train.

Congratulations to our Cavalier football team and coaches on their effort and determination at Bastrop last Friday.   The Cavaliers played hard until the final whistle in true Cavalier spirit.  This week, Calvary hosts Peabody in the first home game of the 2017 season.  Make plans to be in Barker Stadium Friday night to cheer on the Cavaliers.

Congratulations to our Middle School Cavaliers on their 26-14 victory over Cedar Creek yesterday.  Landry Lyddy hit Caden Flowers on a long pass to open the scoring, and Chase Stripland had a big night, scoring a touchdown and a two point conversion on offense.  Defensively, Chase had an interception, and Zeke Toups and Caleb Wardell both recovered Cedar Creek fumbles.

Congratulations to our CBA sophomores on their Powder Puff victories last night.  The Sophomores defeated the Seniors 12-9 in a hard-fought championship game.  Thank you to Mrs. Rutledge, Mrs. Randolph, and everyone who worked hard to make the evening a success.

Happy Birthday today to Molly McDowell

On this date in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem which was later set to music and became the song we know as The Star Spangled Banner – our national anthem.  The poem, originally titled “The Defence of Fort McHenry” was written as Mr. Key watched the fort being bombarded at night by British warships during the War of 1812.  The sight of a lone United States flag still flying at daybreak inspired the famous words we sing today.  Today, you can see that same flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814 in the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Volleyball teams on their victories last night over North Caddo in their first district game of the season.  Audrey Baldwin and Payton Bordelon led the JV in Serving Aces.   Gracie Hart and Liyah Sias topped the kills for JV with 2 each.  In the varsity game, Gussie Treadway, Claire Smith, and Kaylin Little had outstanding nights serving.  Jenna Fielder, Madilyn Sells and Kaylin Little led the team in kills.  Kendyl White recorded 17 assists in 47 attempts with 0 errors.

Congratulations to our Cavalier volleyball team on their success at Haughton yesterday.  Calvary fell in three sets to the #4 ranked team in the state in Division 2-4A.  But with strong hitting from Jenna Fielder, Madilyn Sells, Gussie Treadway, RobiDonna Thomas, Audrey Baldwin and Kendyl White, CBA had 25 kills.  This week CBA volleyball is ranked #6 in the state for Division 4-2A.  

Congratulations, also, to our Middle School football team on their 53-12 victory over the Southside Titans last evening.  The defense forced several turnovers, including a pick-six by Drew Bickham.  Christian Otzenberger was outstanding on defense and was a dominant force from his defensive end position.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Volleyball Team, who inaugurated our new gym floor last night with victories over Huntingtonthe JV won both sets, led by Audrey Baldwin, who served 15 times and had 15 aces.  The varsity won 25-12; 25-15; 25-15, led by Kendyl White, who had 16 aces out of 23 serves, 21 assists, and 39 ball handling attempts with 0 errors.
