On this date in 1771, King Adolf Frederick of Sweden ate himself to death, after eating huge quantities of lobster, caviar, cabbage, smoked herring and champagne, followed by 14 servings of his favorite dessert.

Students, remember that while you have been allowed to wear hoodies to school since Christmas break, the hoodie that you wear must be a Calvary hoodie.  The school policy now reads that you must wear one of the approved jackets or a Calvary hoodie.  Also, your jacket or hoodie does not take the place of a uniform shirt.

Today is Thursday, February 15. 

Happy Birthday today to Avery Miller

On this date in 1903, Morris Michtom, an immigrant from Russia who lived in Brooklyn, NY introduced the first teddy bear to America.  He had seen a political cartoon drawing of President Theodore Roosevelt looking disgusted at a tied-up bear behind him and decided to make a toy bear.  He sent a bear to President Roosevelt and put one in his shop window with the label, Teddy’s Bear, after he received permission from the President to use his name.  The toy bear became an instant success.

Happy Birthday today to Jo Jo Starbuck

On this date in 1932, the United States won the bobsled competition at the Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, NY.  It was the first time that the U.S. had competed in the bobsled.  The winning 4-man team included Edward Eagan, who also had been the 1920 Olympic light heavyweight boxing champion.  Mr. Eagan’s bobsled gold medal made him the first person to win gold in both the summer and winter Olympic Games.

On this date in 1965, a sixteen-year-old American skater named Peggy Fleming won the ladies senior figure skating title at Lake Placid, New York.  On this date three years later, she had won the only gold medal won by America at the 1968 Winter Olympics held in Grenoble, France.

On this date in 2004, the Mattel Toy Corporation announced that Barbie and Ken were breaking up.  With Valentines Day just two days away, I guess it saved Ken some money.

Congratulations to our Lady Cavs and Cavalier basketball teams on their determination and perseverance at Lakeside last Friday.  The varsity girls have now completed their regular season and will receive playoff information today.  The boys are scheduled to host Loyola this Friday and begin playoffs next week.

On this date in 1895, the first college 5 on 5 basketball game was played.  Minnesota State defeated Hamline College 9-3 in a game of strategy and defense.  If this game was before someone thought to cut out the bottoms of the peach baskets, probably no one minded that there wasn’t much scoring.

On this date in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the British throne, following the death of her father, King George VI.  Now in her 67th year as queen, Queen Elizabeth is the longest-reigning British monarch in history.

Congratulations to Fred Davis, Kor’Davion Washington, and Neal Tipton who signed their college Letters of Intent yesterday afternoon.  We wish you the best as you prepare for college.

Happy Birthday today to Laura Ingalls

On this date in 1998, the 18th Winter Olympic Games opened in Nagano, Japan.  Wind, rain, fog, and lightning – with an earthquake thrown in, played havoc with the Alpine Skiing during the first few days.  After 5 days, good weather moved in and the 1998 Winter Olympics ended as a big success.

Congratulations to our Lady Cavs and Cavalier basketball teams on their hustle and perseverance last night against Mansfield.  Calvary will be traveling to Lakeside on Friday to close out this year’s district schedule.

This afternoon there will be a signing ceremony for our senior football players in the Fireside Room.  All friends are invited to join them at 3:30 as they sign their National Letters of Intent to play in college next year.

Happy Birthday today to Olivia Doise

On this date in 1971, golf season opened on the moon.  NASA astronaut Alan Shepherd used a six-iron that he had brought from Earth inside the Apollo 14 spacecraft and hit two golf balls on the surface of the moon.  Commander Shepherd actually took three swings, but his first swing was a whiff.  After he adjusted to the bulkiness of his spacesuit, he hit two crisp shots into the vacuum of space.

There will be a signing ceremony for our senior football players tomorrow afternoon.  You are invited to join them in the Fireside Room at 3:30 tomorrow as they sign their National Letters of Intent to play in college next year.

Happy Birthday today to Roger Staubach

On this date in 1788, Bobbie Peel was born in Lancashire, England.  Mr. Peel organized the first official police force in England, where they refer to their policemen as “Bobbies”, and for forming the first police force in Ireland, where they refer to their policemen as “Peelers”.

Congratulations to our varsity girls’ soccer team on their good season.  The Cavaliers played hard last Friday night, but fell to Lafayette Christian Academy in their first-round playoff game at Lafayette.  Thank you, girls, for representing us well this year.

Congratulations to our Lady Cavs and Cavalier basketball teams on their outstanding efforts against North Caddo on Friday.  The Lady Cavs showed a lot of determination against the number one team in the state, as they played with intensity until the final buzzer despite having fallen behind early in the game.  The boys game saw the Cavaliers play hard but fall to the number 2 Rebels.  Basketball action continues this week, as Calvary hosts Mansfield tomorrow night.  Tomorrow will be Senior Night.

Today is Groundhog Day!

Happy Birthday today to Kaleb Speight.  Happy Birthday tomorrow to Madison Cory.  Happy Birthday Sunday to Olivia Naron.

On this date in 1887, the very first Groundhog Day was held in Punxsutawney, PA, with the first official walk to Gobbler’s Knob to see if a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow.  This morning, Phil saw his shadow…which means, according to legend, that we will have six more weeks of winter.

Congratulations to our varsity boys’ soccer team on their good season.  The Cavaliers played hard last night, but fell to Sterlington 3-1 in their first round playoff game at Sterlington.  Thank you, boys, for representing us well this year. 

Thank you to all of you who ate at El Chico’s last night.  Your support for powerlifting is appreciated. 

Best Wishes to our varsity girls’ soccer team as they travel to Lafayette for a first-round playoff game tonight.  The opponent will be Lafayette Christian, and kick-off is scheduled for 5:30.

Tonight, our Cavalier basketball teams will be playing their next-to-last district home basketball games as they host the North Caddo Rebels.  The North Caddo girls are ranked #1 in the state, and the boys are ranked #2 in the boys’ division.  Beta Club is partnering with the American Heart Association by making tonight “Green Out” games.  The varsity girls will tip-off at 6:00, and all Calvary students in grades K-12 wearing green will be admitted to the games free until 6:30.

Congratulations to our varsity soccer boys on their play last night against North Caddo.  And congratulations to our soccer seniors on their good season.  Both girls and boys have qualified for the playoffs, which will begin this week.  The girls will play at 5:30 Friday in Lafayette.  The boys’ game will be determined today.

Congratulations to our Cavalier and Lady Cavs basketball teams on their hustle and perseverance at Red River last night.  Plan on being here Friday night when Calvary will host North Caddo for the American Heart Association games. 

A letterman’s jacket representative will be on campus tomorrow afternoon from 1:30 until 3:00.  Come by the Athletics Office if you want to order a letter jacket or patches.

Newk’s Eatery is hosting a Lady Cavs Basketball fundraiser tonight from 5:00 until 9:00.  Plan to stop by Newks and grab a bite to eat before church tonight.  Just remember to tell them that you’re from Calvary.

Congratulations to our Lady Cavs and Cavalier basketball teams on their district victories last Friday over D’Arbonne Woods.  This week, Calvary travels to Red River tomorrow and hosts North Caddo on Friday.

Today is Wednesday, January 24.

Happy Birthday today to Lauren Holley.

On this date in 1848, a gold nugget was found at Sutter’s Mill in Northern California.  Because news traveled so slowly in 1848, the discovery would not be announced by President James K. Polk until December – 11 months later.  President Polk’s announcement would trigger the California gold rush of 1849, bringing a surge of people to California that would eventually lead to statehood, and one day providing a name for San Francisco’s professional football team.

Congratulations to our Cavalier boys’ soccer team on their victory at Red River last night.  The boys will play Bossier tomorrow at Tinsley.   

Also, congratulations to our Cavalier and Lady Cavs basketball teams on their victories over Lakeside last night.  Next up for Calvary is a trip to D’Arbonne Woods on Friday as they continue district play.

You may think that it was cold last week, but on this date in 1971, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the United States was reported.  At Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska, the thermometer dipped to 80 degrees below zero – 112 degrees below the freezing point of water.

Congratulations to our Cavalier varsity soccer teams on their intensity and enthusiasm in their games with Evangel last night.   

Also, congratulations to our JV boys’ basketball team on their 2-point victory at Loyola last night. 

The date for the meeting for prospective tennis players in grades 9-12 which was scheduled for Friday has been changed.  That meeting will now be on Monday, immediately after school at the Southern Hills Tennis Center.

Today is Monday, January 22.

Happy Birthday today to George Byron.

On this date in 1951, an aspiring baseball player named Fidel Castro was ejected from a Winter League baseball game in Cuba after hitting a batter with a pitch.  He later gave up baseball and took up politics.

Congratulations to our Cavalier and Lady Cavs Basketball teams on their intensity and enthusiasm at Mansfield last Friday night.  All the girls played hard and gave the Wolverines all that they could handle, but fell short on the scoreboard.  The boys’ game was hard-fought, with the Cavaliers pulling out a 57-52 win.  District play continues tomorrow night, when the Lakeside Warriors come to Calvary.

Also, congratulations to Jackson Gregory and J.K. Pearce on their success at this past weekend’s Boat Show fishing tournament.  Jackson and J.K. placed 8th out of 115 teams, and Calvary finished 2nd overall!

This Friday afternoon there will be a meeting for students in grades 9-12 who are interested in playing tennis this year.  That meeting will be immediately after school at the Southern Hills Tennis Center.

Congratulations to our Cavalier and Lady Cavs Basketball teams on their intensity and enthusiasm at North Caddo last night. Both teams played hard, but fell short on the scoreboard.  District play continues tonight at Mansfield.  The next home games will be next Tuesday, when Lakeside comes to Calvary.

Last night’s varsity soccer games were postponed due to the cold weather.  Both the girls and boys will be back in action Monday, when Calvary hosts Evangel at 6:00.

On this date in 1778, English navigator Captain James Cook discovered the Hawaiian Islands.  He named them the Sandwich Islands in honor of John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who was one of the sponsors of his voyage.

Our Basketball and Soccer teams will be back in competition this evening.  Everybody will be traveling to North Caddo.  Girls’ basketball will begin the indoor action at 6:00 in the North Caddo gym, and our girls’ soccer team will kick-off the outdoor action at 6:00 outside in Rebel Stadium.  We wish all our teams the best tonight.

Happy Birthday today to Allie Booth 

On this date in 1901, oil was discovered beneath Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas.  The gusher blew oil 150 feet into the air at the rate of 4 million gallons per day for 9 days before it could be brought under control.  It launched the Texas oil boom and instantly made the United States the world’s leading oil producer.

Congratulations to our Cavaliers and Lady Cavs basketball teams on their district wins last night over the D’Arbonne Woods Timberwolves.  Both the girls and boys will be in action again this Friday when they travel to Lakeview

Congratulations, also, to our Lady Cavs varsity soccer team on their hustle and enthusiasm in last night’s game with Captain Shreve.   

We have some results from last Saturday’s powerlifting meet at Calvary.  The girls finished second in the meet:  Caitlin Johnson won 1st in her division; Mya Evans, Aubrey Mayo, and Skylar Odom were second in their division, and 3rd places were won by Allie Lazarus and Kaylin Little.  The Cavalier boys also finished second as a team:  1st places were won by Cameron Fileccia, Kor’Davion Washington, and Jack Tyndall; Latarraus Jackson, Roderick Harris, and Phillip Legler took 2nd places, and Cameron Thomas finished 3rd  in his division.

All golfers and any students interested in a beginner golf class are welcome to attend Monday and Thursday classes at Querbes at 3:30. There is no cost for the first class.

On this date in 1815, the Battle of New Orleans began.  General Andrew Jackson commanded the American forces that defeated the invading British.  His success in this battle put him on the road to eventually becoming the 7th President of the United States, and gave a singer named Johnny Horton something to sing about.

Congratulations to our girls’ and boys’ basketball teams on their successes over the break.  Tomorrow night the Cavaliers and Lady Cavs start district play as Calvary hosts D’Arbonne Woods.  The action will begin with JV girls at 5:00, to be followed by the varsity girls and the varsity boys.

Congratulations to our Cavalier basketball team on their success in the Minden Holiday Tournament.  The Cavaliers advanced to the consolation championship game, but fell to Camden, Arkansas in the final.  Tomorrow night, both girls and boys will host North Webster.

Right now you should be in your 3rd hour class, as today’s semester exams will be for 3rd hour and 5th hour classes.  3rd hour class will last until 9:35. Your 5th hour exam is scheduled to begin at 9:40, and high school classes will be dismissed at 11:05.  Tomorrow morning, you will report to your 2nd hour class, then go to 6th hour at 9:40.  Tomorrow we will make announcements at the usual 8:05 time.

Tomorrow, students may wear jeans and appropriate Christmas attire.

Happy Birthday today to Garrett Little.

On this date in 1891, a P.E. teacher named James Naismith invented a new game for his class.  He wrote down 13 rules, nailed a peach basket to the balcony railing at each end of the gym and found an old soccer ball.  Every time a basket was made, someone had to bring out a ladder to retrieve the ball, until he thought to cut the bottoms out of the baskets.

Congratulations to our Cavalier basketball team on their hard-fought victory over Homer yesterday in the second round of the Minden Holiday Tournament.

Congratulations, also, to our Lady Cavs on their 45-21 victory over the Doyline Panthers last night.  Next up for the Lady Cavs will be North Webster next Tuesday.  That game will be here at Calvary

Today, semester exams will be for 1st hour and 4th hour classes.  You will be in your regular 1st hour class until 9:35. Congratulations to our Cavalier varsity soccer teams on their victories over Southwood last night.  The girls took a 3-1 victory on goals from Kynli Cunningham and Nichole Gauntt.  The boys won 6-2, led by goals from Seth Stevens, Jordan Wallace, Carter Higgins, and Beau Mathews.

Congratulations to our Cavalier and Lady Cavs basketball teams on their games at Green Oaks last night.   The girls won 43-22.  The boys played hard, but fell 52-44 to the Giants.

Congratulations to our Cavalier varsity soccer teams that traveled to Minden last night.  The girls took a 2-0 victory on goals from Kynli Cunningham and Carson Davis.  Braden Reeder and Seth Stevens scored to lead the boys to a 2-0 win.

Congratulations to our Cavalier girls’ basketball team on their games with Pickering last night.  Chloe Kalmbach scored with eight seconds left in the game to give the JV Lady Cavs a one-point victory.  In the varsity game, the Lady Cavs played well, but fell 40-43 to the Red Devils.

Congratulations to our JV boys’ basketball team on their enthusiasm and play at Southwood last night.

Congratulations to our Cavalier boys’ basketball team on their second-place finish in the Parkway Tournament championship last Saturday evening.  The Cavaliers defeated Haughton and Ringgold to advance to Saturday’s game, but fell to the defending state runner-up Rayville Hornets in the final.

Also, congratulations to our Cavalier wrestlers who competed on Saturday.  We don’t have those results yet, but will announce them when we get them.

On this date in 1964, the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Christmas special aired for the first time.  Rudolph has been shown on TV every year since 1964, making it the longest-running Christmas TV special in history.  CBS bought the exclusive rights to the show in 1972, and unlike other Christmas specials, Rudolph can be seen only on CBS.

Congratulations to our Cavalier soccer teams on their play last night.  The girls defeated Northwood 5-2, and the boys played Huntington to a tie.  Both soccer teams are now off until next Monday, when they travel to Minden.

Congratulations to our Cavalier basketball teams on their hustle and enthusiasm last night as they took on the Byrd Yellow Jackets.  The Lady Cavs played hard, but had a tough shooting night and fell to the Yellow Jackets 35-25.  After 6 games in 9 days, the girls have a short break before hosting Pickering next Monday night.  In the boys’ game last night, the Cavaliers played well and led for most of the game, but a Byrd layup at the end of regulation tied the score, and the Yellow Jackets won in overtime 63-60.  This week the boys are in the Parkway tournament and will play tonight and tomorrow at Parkway.

This year’s BETA state convention will be February 7-9 in Baton Rouge.  The cost of the trip will be approximately $150.  Today is the deadline for you to pay your $75 deposit to Mrs. McDowell.

Today is Monday, December 4. 

Happy Birthday today to Thatcher Ellender

On this date in 1961, Genevieve Habert, a New York stockbroker visiting the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, noticed that the famous Henri Matisse painting, Le Bateau, was hanging upside down.  It turned out that the print had been upside down for 47 days, unnoticed by thousands of museum visitors over the past month and a half.

Congratulations to the Cavalier fishing team of Jackson Gregory and John Kyle Pearce.  Jackson and JK won first place out of 80 boats yesterday at the Four State Bass Classic.  The total weight of their 5 fish was just over 15 pounds.

And Congratulations to our Cavalier wrestling team that competed in Azle, Texas this past weekend.  Coming home with medals were: Mitchell Colgin, Austin Walpole, and Cory Burnham each took second in his weight class.  Andrew Duncan and Josh Purvis finished in 3rd place in their weight divisions.

Congratulations to our varsity Cavalier basketball teams on their success in the Haughton tournament this past week.  After falling to Haughton on Wednesday, the Lady Cavs came back and defeated Montgomery 44-40 Friday night and then captured the consolation championship with a 43-27 victory over Northwood on Saturday.  The boys beat West Ouachita on Wednesday, then defeated Minden 68-62 in overtime Friday night and won the tournament championship on Saturday with a 68-65 win over Benton.  It was a great weekend for Calvary basketball.  Next up for the Cavaliers and Lady Cavs is C.E. Byrd tomorrow night, here at Calvary.

Also, Congratulations to our powerlifting girls on their success this past Saturday.  Placing 1st in the meet with Shreve and Ruston were Kailey Brookshire, Emma Lazarus, Aubrey Mayo, and Skylar Odom.  Second place finishers were Allie Lazarus, Taylor Bell, Caitlyn Perser, Chloe Kalmbach, Jada Lewis, and Hannah Guerrero.  Third places went to Barbara Manno, Colbi Giglio, Jenna Fielder, and Caitlin Johnson.

On this date in 1885, the first Dr. Pepper was served, one year before Coca-Cola was introduced.  The first Dr. Pepper was created by Charles Alderton in Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas.  Customers at Morrison’s soda fountain soon learned of the new drink and began ordering it by referring to it as a “Waco”.  The inventor, Alderton, gave the formula to his boss, Morrison, who named it Dr. Pepper.

Happy Birthday today to Bailey Holt, Joshua Osborne, and Donovan Teddlie.

On this date in 1858, John Mason received a patent for his invention of a pepper shaker with a screw-on cap.  Little did Mr. Mason know at the time of his invention about the practical jokes that his shaker would create in dining rooms around the world in the future.

Congratulations to our Cavalier and Lady Cavs Basketball teams on their games last night in the first round of the Haughton Tournament.  The girls gave Haughton all that they could handle, but a Haughton run in the last minute of the game gave the Buccaneers the victory.  The Lady Cavs will now play Montgomery Friday at 5:30.  After trailing early in the game, our Cavalier boys came from behind to defeat the West Ouachita Chiefs by one point in a barn-burner game.  The Cavaliers will now play Friday night at 8:30.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Basketball teams.  The JV boys won at Huntington and the varsity boys pulled away in the fourth quarter to take a 50-44 victory over our visitors from Northwood.  In the girls’ game, the Lady Cavs played with intensity and came from behind in the final quarter, but came up short on a 34-37 score.

This afternoon, Marissa Reed and Nichole Gauntt will be signing their college letters of intent to attend Northwestern State and Centenary next year.  The ceremony will be in the Fireside Room and begin at 4:00. Friends and classmates are invited to attend.

Welcome back to school.  We hope you had a great Cavalier Thanksgiving! 

Happy Birthday today to Dustin Lang.

On this date in 1924, the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held.  It was so successful that it was made an annual event.

Congratulations to our Cavalier swim team on their success at the state swim meet in Sulphur last week.  Every Cavalier swimmer made it to the finals and each one swam a personal best time in every event.  Out of the 30 teams at the meet, the girls won the 200 freestyle relay and the boys got 3rd in their relays.  In the girls’ division, Sarah Holt won her two individual events and set a new state record in the 100 butterfly.  Sarah was named Top Swimmer of the Meet.  Caroline Horne placed 4th in both of her individual events.  Molly McDowell won top 16 in both of her individual events, and Liberty Haase took 10th place in the 100 backstroke.  In the boys’ division, Christian Booth was second in the 100 backstroke, Ben Ponder placed 2nd and 3rd in his events, and Josh Roper was 6th and 13th.  Martin McDowell was 10th in the 100 Free, and Austin Wood won 2nd alternate.

Congratulations to our Cavalier varsity football team on their fine season.  The Cavaliers fell to the New Iberia Panthers in their second-round playoff game, but despite the outcome not being what we would have liked, the Cavaliers continued to play hard until the final whistle and represented Calvary well.  Thank you, players and coaches, for your hard work this year.

Congratulations, also, to Andrew Otzenberger, who traveled to Baylor University this past weekend and competed in his first International Tennis Federation Professional Circuit tournament.  Andrew won his first match in the qualifying draw.

On this date in 1875, a Philadelphia dentist, Dr. William Bonwell, was issued a patent for his invention – a mallet used to hammer gold fillings into cavities.  Dr. Bonwell’s first patient was reported to have said “YeeeeeOWWWWW” when the mallet hit the exposed nerve of his tooth…to which Dr. Bonwell responded with the well-known comeback line, “Oops!”

Tomorrow, school will be dismissed early so that Cavalier fans can travel to New Iberia for the second-round football playoff game with Catholic High School.  Students will be dismissed at 11:30 tomorrow morning.  If you leave school earlier than 11:30, make sure that you sign-out in the main office.  All tickets for tomorrow night’s game will be $10.

Please keep our Cavalier swim team in your prayers as they continue to compete at the State Swim Meet in Sulphur today.  All our swimmers did well yesterday and are swimming again this morning.  Sarah Holt set a state record yesterday.

Zebulon Pike was leading a survey party across the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territory when he spotted a snow-capped mountain rising above the prairie in the distance.  The mountain, referred to by the native Ute Indians as “the long one”, would be named after Lt. Pike.  Pike’s Peak or Bust became the slogan for many wagon trains headed west in the 1800’s, and in 1883, inspired by the view from the summit, Katherine Lee Bates, a teacher at Colorado College, wrote America the Beautiful.

On this date in 1889, a New York newspaper reporter named Nellie Bly began her attempt to travel around the world in fewer than 80 days…trying to beat the time of Jules Verne’s fictitious Englishman, Phileas Fogg.  Mrs. Bly would succeed, as she would complete her journey in January – in just over 72 days.  Like Jules Verne, she also wrote a book about her adventure, Around the World in 72 Days, which became an immediate best seller.

Happy Birthday today to Joshua Purvis, Cliff Mosley, and Matthew Barnard

On this date in 1938, a radio show called “the War of the Worlds” aired on CBS Radio.  Presented by a man named Orson Welles, the show was set up as a music program interrupted by news bulletins saying that Martians had landed in a field near Princeton, New Jersey.  Although a disclaimer was broadcast several times throughout the program, most listeners did not pay attention to the announcements that said that the story was fictional, and the highways of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were jammed for hours with people trying to escape the invasion.  Thousands of people across America panicked and took measures to protect their homes from the Martians.

Congratulations to our Cavalier varsity football team on their enthusiasm and effort in the win over Mansfield last Friday night.  This week, the Cavaliers finish their regular District 1-2A season on Thursday when they host the North Caddo Rebels at Barker Stadium.

On this date in 1881, the Gunfight at the OK corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona, as town Marshall Virgil Earp, his brothers Morgan and Wyatt and friend Doc Holliday confronted outlaws Billy Claiborne, Ike and Billy Clanton, and Tom and Frank McLaury.  The gunfight is generally regarded as the most famous shootout in the history of the American West, but actually lasted only about 30 seconds. 

Congratulations to our Cavalier swimmers on their success at Centenary yesterday.  We do not have results yet, but will announce them when we get them. 

Today is Class Color day.  For this afternoon’s Field Day, all students are to report to 6th hour class and then be dismissed to head outside to the stadium. 

Tomorrow will be Palm Tree Day, so dress in green and gold to support the Cavaliers. The parade will begin at 9:00, to be followed by a pep rally in the gym.

Congratulations, also, to our middle school Cavalier football team on a fine season.  Calvary fell to CMM last night 14-8 in a game that saw our boys play hard to the finish in true Cavalier style.

Congratulations to our middle school Cavalier football team on their37-26 victory over Mansfield last night. Caden Flowers had a big night with two touchdown receptions and two interceptions.  Chase Stripland also had a touchdown and an interception.  The middle school boys will finish out their schedule next Tuesday when they host Caddo Middle Magnet.

On this date in 1781, British General Charles Cornwallis formally surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia, ending the American Revolutionary War.  In a display of sore loser, Cornwallis actually sent his second-in-command to deliver his sword, so American General George Washington coolly directed him to his own second-in-command, Major General Benjamin Lincoln, who accepted the token of surrender.

Congratulations, also, to our Middle School Cavalier football team.  Last night, Calvary’s offensive line of Zeke Toups, Denham Smith, Drew Bickham, Landon Mayeaux, and Landon Rotharmel dominated the line of scrimmage the entire game as the young Cavaliers rolled to a 44-8 victory over our visitors from Natchitoches.

Happy Birthday today to Cody Vannoppen and Michael Fontana

On this date in 1920, the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates played the only triple header in modern baseball history.  The first game began at noon and the final out was recorded at 5:01 p.m.…three complete games in only 5 hours.  The Reds won 2 of the 3 games, enabling them to finish 3rd in the National League race and share World Series profits that year.

Congratulations to our Cavalier football team on their enthusiasm and play against Sterlington Friday night.  This week, Calvary travels across town to take on the Loyola Flyers Friday night.

Congratulations, also, to Mrs. Brookshire and our Cavalier cross-country team on their successful invitational cross-country meet on Saturday.

And congratulations to our Cavalier swimmers who competed at Centenary on Saturday.  Our girls’ relay got a 1st and 2nd place out of 14 relays.  Swimming for Calvary were:  Brennan Barber, Liberty Haase, Sarah Holt, Caroline Horne, Molly McDowell, Ben Ponder, and Josh Roper.  Between them, they made 18 state times and finished 4th overall out of 12 teams.

In varsity action, Avery Debelak led the team with 5 aces.  Jenna Fielder led the kills with 5, followed by Kaylin Little and Avery with 3 each.  Next Monday CBA Volleyball plays Byrd at Byrd.

Happy Birthday today to Claire Fletcher

On this date in 1892, the first nighttime football game took place under electric lights.  In the early days of football, it was common for a college and high school to play each other, and this first game was between Wyoming Seminary, a private college in Pennsylvania, and the High School in Mansfield, Pennsylvania.  The lighting system turned out to be inadequate, and the game itself lasted only 20 minutes.  Both sides agreed to end the game early with a 0 to 0 tie after several players had run into light poles.

Congratulations to our Calvary volleyball teams on their victories over North Caddo last night.  Breanna Walker dominated the court with 27 serve points and 17 aces.  Gracie Hart contributed 10 serve points 8 aces, and 3 kills.  Avery Debelak helped bring the varsity team back from a 11-20 deficit to go ahead 22-20 with multiple serves and aces.  Avery led the team with 20 serving points and 14 aces for a total of 34 points off serves, followed by Kaylin Little with 13 serve points and 8 aces.  Jenna Fielder and Madilyn Sells led the kills with 7 and 5 respectively.

Congratulations to our Middle School Cavalier football team and coaches on their 51-12 victory over the Southside Titans yesterday.  The Calvary defense, led by Denham Smith, Landon Mayeaux, Christian Otzenberger, and Caden Flowers, was outstanding and did not allow an offensive touchdown all game.

This Friday, Calvary plays Peabody in the first home game of the 2017 varsity football season.  Student admission to each home football game will be $5.00.  There are 5 home football games this year, and we are making a Student season pass available for $20 – that’s a savings of $5 for you.  Student passes can be purchased from Mrs. McCartney in the Athletics Office.

Happy Birthday today to Caitlyn Perser, Regan Collins, and Ellie Volden.

On this date in 1830, in response to arguments about whether a machine would ever replace natural power, a race was held between a horse and the first train locomotive built in America on a nine-mile course outside Baltimore, Maryland.  The locomotive had some mechanical difficulties, and the horse won easily, convincing most of the onlookers that the steam train would never replace the wagon train.

Congratulations to our Middle School Cavaliers on their 26-14 victory over Cedar Creek yesterday.  Landry Lyddy hit Caden Flowers on a long pass to open the scoring, and Chase Stripland had a big night, scoring a touchdown and a two point conversion on offense.  Defensively, Chase had an interception, and Zeke Toups and Caleb Wardell both recovered Cedar Creek fumbles.

Congratulations to our CBA sophomores on their Powder Puff victories last night.  The Sophomores defeated the Seniors 12-9 in a hard-fought championship game.  Thank you to Mrs. Rutledge, Mrs. Randolph, and everyone who worked hard to make the evening a success.

Happy Birthday today to Molly McDowell

On this date in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem which was later set to music and became the song we know as The Star Spangled Banner – our national anthem.  The poem, originally titled “The Defence of Fort McHenry” was written as Mr. Key watched the fort being bombarded at night by British warships during the War of 1812.  The sight of a lone United States flag still flying at daybreak inspired the famous words we sing today.  Today, you can see that same flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814 in the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Volleyball teams on their victories last night over North Caddo in their first district game of the season.  Audrey Baldwin and Payton Bordelon led the JV in Serving Aces.   Gracie Hart and Liyah Sias topped the kills for JV with 2 each.  In the varsity game, Gussie Treadway, Claire Smith, and Kaylin Little had outstanding nights serving.  Jenna Fielder, Madilyn Sells and Kaylin Little led the team in kills.  Kendyl White recorded 17 assists in 47 attempts with 0 errors.

Congratulations to our Cavalier volleyball team on their success at Haughton yesterday.  Calvary fell in three sets to the #4 ranked team in the state in Division 2-4A.  But with strong hitting from Jenna Fielder, Madilyn Sells, Gussie Treadway, RobiDonna Thomas, Audrey Baldwin and Kendyl White, CBA had 25 kills.  This week CBA volleyball is ranked #6 in the state for Division 4-2A.  

Congratulations, also, to our Middle School football team on their 53-12 victory over the Southside Titans last evening.  The defense forced several turnovers, including a pick-six by Drew Bickham.  Christian Otzenberger was outstanding on defense and was a dominant force from his defensive end position.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Volleyball Team, who inaugurated our new gym floor last night with victories over Huntingtonthe JV won both sets, led by Audrey Baldwin, who served 15 times and had 15 aces.  The varsity won 25-12; 25-15; 25-15, led by Kendyl White, who had 16 aces out of 23 serves, 21 assists, and 39 ball handling attempts with 0 errors.
