Congratulations to our Cavalier golf team, who qualified yesterday for the State Golf Meet next Monday and Tuesday in Lafayette.
Congratulations to our Cavalier baseball team on their play against Loyola last night. The Cavaliers will begin playoff action tomorrow, when they host Pope John Paul II for a double header. The first game will begin at 5:00.
There will be a meeting for all boys interested in playing basketball next year in the gym at 3:10 this afternoon.
Tomorrow afternoon, we will have our annual Student vs. Faculty basketball game. Students who want to attend need to pay $2 to your home room teacher. Game time will be 1:15 tomorrow afternoon.
If you are wanting to play volleyball for Calvary next year, all volleyball forms need to be turned in, and tryouts will be next week, May 2 and 3. Tryouts will be after school, from 3:30 to 5:30.

On this date in 1805, the United States Marines attacked and captured the town of Derna in Tripoli during the first Barbary War. This was the first land battle by American soldiers on foreign soil and it brought about two Marines traditions: it resulted in the adoption of the sword worn by Marines officers with their dress uniforms, and it inspired the first line of the Marines Hymn, “From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli.”

Happy Birthday today to Caley Englade and Landon Mayeaux.
On this date in 303ad, Saint George used his sword to kill a dragon – just in time to save the King’s daughter from the fire-breathing beast. Today is Saint George Feast Day in England. As the story goes, it was only through George’s deep faith in God that he was able to accomplish the deed. Years later, as British society changed, because of his strong and open Christianity, George was arrested, tortured, and put to death. The martyred hero was so revered that for many years English soldiers wore the red cross of Saint George as a badge, and in fact, the red St. George’s cross on a white background is still the main part of the British flag today.
Congratulations to our Cavalier tracksters on their success at the district meet last Friday in Mansfield. In the girls’ division, Mya Evans placed 4th in the 100, Cat Hesterman was 2nd and Kailey Brookshire 4th in the 400, Sarah Holt was 3rd in the 1600, and the 4X200 relay team placed 3rd. Sarah Holt won the girls’ high jump, Lizzie Holley was 3rd in the long jump, and Maddie Sells and Devan Strange finished 1st and 2nd in the javelin.
In the boys’ division, Eric Reed won the 100, LaMique Spruill placed 3rd in the 400, and Martin McDowell won the 1600 meter run. Malachi Fitzwater won the 110 hurdles, and finished 2nd in the 300 hurdles. The boys’ relay teams finished 2nd all three relay events. Joseph Wilson took 4th in the long jump, Brian Barber was 2nd in the pole vault, and Malachi Fitzwater and Tanner Hooker finished 3rd and 4th in the high jump. Joseph Wilson and Cameron Thomas were 2nd and 3rd in the triple jump, while Cliff Mosley was 3rd in the shot put and Johnathan Elie finished 2nd in the discus. The Cavaliers placed 2nd as a team in the boys’ division.

On this date in 1860, the first Pony Express mail was delivered to Sacramento, CA as the final of the westbound relay riders from St. Joseph, MO arrived. The 2000 mile ride took ten days, but it was the fastest way to get mail across the western United States in 1860. The Pony Express route consisted of 190 relay stations spread out at intervals of 10-15 miles apart, and there were 22 riders. Each rider rode about 100 miles, most of it at a gallop, and changed to a fresh horse at each station, before giving the mail to the next rider in the relay. Many of the Pony Express riders were as young as 11 years old.
Congratulations to our Cavalier baseball team on their hustle and enthusiasm in last night’s games with Lakeside. The Cavaliers fell to the Warriors 4-6 in last night’s first game, but came back to win the nightcap 4-2. Game 3 for the district championship is scheduled for tonight at Lakeside.
Congratulations to our Cavalier tracksters who competed at Cedar Creek yesterday. In the girls’ division, Maddie Sells and Devan Strange both threw their personal bests in the javelin to pick up team points. The team of Kailey Brookshire, Sarah Holt, Lizzie Holley, an Cat Hesterman finished 4th in the 4X200 meter relay. Cat and Kailey were 1st and 4th in the open 400. Lizzie and Mya Evans ran season bests in the 100 meter dash. Kailey ran a personal best in the 300 hurdles, while Sarah took the silver medal in both the 1600 meter run and the girls’ high jump. In the boys’ division, Malachi Fitzwater won the bronze in the high jump and ran personal bests in both the 110 high hurdles and the boys’ 300 meter hurdles. Both the boys and girls now prepare for the district meet next Friday in Mansfield.

Happy Birthday today to the State of Louisiana
On this date in 1905, Mr. Barney Gilmore was arrested in St. Louis, MO for spitting. Mr. Gilmore, who was from New York and visiting St. Louis, was walking from the Post Office to his hotel when, at the intersection of Eighth Street and Olive Street, he spat directly on the sidewalk, just a few feet away from St. Louis police officer, P.J. McKay. Officer McKay immediately placed him under arrest. Mr. Gilmore claimed that as a visitor to St. Louis he knew nothing of the spitting law, but he was told that ignorance of the law was no excuse, and he was arrested anyway.

Happy Birthday today to Chase Jennings and Cody Pesnell
On this date in 1931, The Star-Spangled Banner was made America’s National Anthem by a Congressional Resolution signed by President Hoover. The song was originally a poem titled “The Defence of Fort McHenry”, which was written by Francis Scott Key as he watched from the deck of one of the British ships on which he was being held captive as the British navy bombarded Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.
Congratulations to the CBA students who competed at Powerlifting Nationals in Appleton, Wisconsin on March 23. In the girls’ competition, Aubrey Mayo and Kaylin Little placed 11th in their respective weight classes. Hannah Guerrero took 8th place and Skylar Odom 6th in their classes. Allie Lazarus captured 2nd place in her class, and in the 47kg class, Kailey Brookshire is the National Champion. As a team, the CBA girls finished as National Runner-up. In the boys’ competition, Cameron Fileccia finished 13th in his weight class.
The Junior-Senior Prom is this Saturday, and Prom tickets are still on sale. Tickets are $25 each, or $45 for a couple. Tickets are available from Mrs. Randolph.

On this date in 1972, motorcycle daredevil, Evil Knievel, successfully jumped 35 cars on his motorcycle…and broke 93 bones when he landed. During his career as a motorcycle distance jumper, he had a total of 433 broken bones – enough to get him a world record for career broken bones.

The volunteers, which included Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett, had been able to delay the Mexican army long enough to allow General Sam Houston to prepare his army, and 46 days from today’s date, with a battle cry of “Remember the Alamo”, the Texas army defeated Santa Anna and won independence for Texas.

On this date in 1855, the United States Congress appropriated $30,000 to ship camels to the western states. The Mexican-American War had resulted in the United States now owning vast amounts of arid land in the west, and camels were seen as a hope for more economical transportation across the area between Texas and California. 33 camels were purchased and put into service, but while they were very well suited to the desert of the American southwest, their presence frightened the Army’s horses and mules, and the camel project was eventually abandoned.

The Cavaliers finished the 2017-2018 season last Friday evening when they fell to the top-seeded Riverside Rebels in the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs. Congratulations to our Cavalier basketball team on their 63-53 victory over Notre Dame Crowley last night in the Regional round of the state playoffs. Calvary now advances to the quarterfinals and will play Riverside Academy this Friday. That game will be at Riverside.
This past Saturday, CBA hosted the North Regionals Powerlifting meet. Congratulations to Taylor Bell and Hannah Guerrero, who each placed 5th in their weight classifications, Avery Covington, Mya Evans, and Skylar Odom, who finished 3rd, Jenna Fielder and Allie Lazarus, who each took 2nd place, and to Kailey Brookshire and Aubrey Mayo, who won their weight divisions. The girls finished 2nd as a team.
In the boys’ division, congratulations to Cameron Thomas, who took 4th place, Cameron Fileccia and Lataraus Jackson, who placed 3rd, Roderick Harris, who finished 2nd, and to Jack Tyndall, who won his weight division. The boys’ team finished 4th overall.
Remember that this Saturday is the CBA CAVS Club Green, Gold, & Glitz dinner and auction. Tickets are $25 per person or $40 per couple. All proceeds from the evening benefit CBA academic programs.
Clinic and tryouts for both middle school and varsity cheer squads for the 2018-2019 school year will be next week. Information and required forms may be picked up from the front office. Teacher recommendation forms must be turned in to the office no later than 3:00 Friday, March 2nd.

Today could be considered National Park Day, as in addition to Grand Canyon in 1919, ten years later on today’s date in 1929, President Coolidge signed a bill creating Grand Teton National Park, and in 1933 on today’s date, a ceremony was held in California establishing Golden Gate Bridge National Park.
Congratulations to our Lady Cavs basketball team on their fine season. The Lady Cavs finished their season last week as they fell to the Dunham Tigers in the Regional round of the state playoffs. The Lady Cavs established several firsts for our girls’ basketball program this season and built a foundation for even more success next year. Great job!

He had seen a political cartoon drawing of President Theodore Roosevelt looking disgusted at a tied-up bear behind him and decided to make a toy bear. He sent a bear to President Roosevelt and put one in his shop window with the label, Teddy’s Bear, after he received permission from the President to use his name. The toy bear became an instant success.

Mr. Eagan’s bobsled gold medal made him the first person to win gold in both the summer and winter Olympic Games.

NASA astronaut Alan Shepherd used a six-iron that he had brought from Earth inside the Apollo 14 spacecraft and hit two golf balls on the surface of the moon. Commander Shepherd actually took three swings, but his first swing was a whiff. After he adjusted to the bulkiness of his spacesuit, he hit two crisp shots into the vacuum of space.

All the girls played hard and gave the Wolverines all that they could handle, but fell short on the scoreboard. The boys’ game was hard-fought, with the Cavaliers pulling out a 57-52 win. District play continues tomorrow night, when the Lakeside Warriors come to Calvary.

The girls finished second in the meet: Caitlin Johnson won 1st in her division; Mya Evans, Aubrey Mayo, and Skylar Odom were second in their division, and 3rd places were won by Allie Lazarus and Kaylin Little. The Cavalier boys also finished second as a team: 1st places were won by Cameron Fileccia, Kor’Davion Washington, and Jack Tyndall; Latarraus Jackson, Roderick Harris, and Phillip Legler took 2nd places, and Cameron Thomas finished 3rd in his division.

The Lady Cavs played hard, but had a tough shooting night and fell to the Yellow Jackets 35-25. After 6 games in 9 days, the girls have a short break before hosting Pickering next Monday night. In the boys’ game last night, the Cavaliers played well and led for most of the game, but a Byrd layup at the end of regulation tied the score, and the Yellow Jackets won in overtime 63-60. This week the boys are in the Parkway tournament and will play tonight and tomorrow at Parkway.

On this date in 1961, Genevieve Habert, a New York stockbroker visiting the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, noticed that the famous Henri Matisse painting, Le Bateau, was hanging upside down. It turned out that the print had been upside down for 47 days, unnoticed by thousands of museum visitors over the past month and a half.
Congratulations to the Cavalier fishing team of Jackson Gregory and John Kyle Pearce. Jackson and JK won first place out of 80 boats yesterday at the Four State Bass Classic. The total weight of their 5 fish was just over 15 pounds.
And Congratulations to our Cavalier wrestling team that competed in Azle, Texas this past weekend. Coming home with medals were: Mitchell Colgin, Austin Walpole, and Cory Burnham each took second in his weight class. Andrew Duncan and Josh Purvis finished in 3rd place in their weight divisions.
Congratulations to our varsity Cavalier basketball teams on their success in the Haughton tournament this past week. After falling to Haughton on Wednesday, the Lady Cavs came back and defeated Montgomery 44-40 Friday night and then captured the consolation championship with a 43-27 victory over Northwood on Saturday. The boys beat West Ouachita on Wednesday, then defeated Minden 68-62 in overtime Friday night and won the tournament championship on Saturday with a 68-65 win over Benton. It was a great weekend for Calvary basketball. Next up for the Cavaliers and Lady Cavs is C.E. Byrd tomorrow night, here at Calvary.
Also, Congratulations to our powerlifting girls on their success this past Saturday. Placing 1st in the meet with Shreve and Ruston were Kailey Brookshire, Emma Lazarus, Aubrey Mayo, and Skylar Odom. Second place finishers were Allie Lazarus, Taylor Bell, Caitlyn Perser, Chloe Kalmbach, Jada Lewis, and Hannah Guerrero. Third places went to Barbara Manno, Colbi Giglio, Jenna Fielder, and Caitlin Johnson.

On this date in 1924, the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was held. It was so successful that it was made an annual event.
Congratulations to our Cavalier swim team on their success at the state swim meet in Sulphur last week. Every Cavalier swimmer made it to the finals and each one swam a personal best time in every event. Out of the 30 teams at the meet, the girls won the 200 freestyle relay and the boys got 3rd in their relays. In the girls’ division, Sarah Holt won her two individual events and set a new state record in the 100 butterfly. Sarah was named Top Swimmer of the Meet. Caroline Horne placed 4th in both of her individual events. Molly McDowell won top 16 in both of her individual events, and Liberty Haase took 10th place in the 100 backstroke. In the boys’ division, Christian Booth was second in the 100 backstroke, Ben Ponder placed 2nd and 3rd in his events, and Josh Roper was 6th and 13th. Martin McDowell was 10th in the 100 Free, and Austin Wood won 2nd alternate.
Congratulations to our Cavalier varsity football team on their fine season. The Cavaliers fell to the New Iberia Panthers in their second-round playoff game, but despite the outcome not being what we would have liked, the Cavaliers continued to play hard until the final whistle and represented Calvary well. Thank you, players and coaches, for your hard work this year.
Congratulations, also, to Andrew Otzenberger, who traveled to Baylor University this past weekend and competed in his first International Tennis Federation Professional Circuit tournament. Andrew won his first match in the qualifying draw.

Presented by a man named Orson Welles, the show was set up as a music program interrupted by news bulletins saying that Martians had landed in a field near Princeton, New Jersey. Although a disclaimer was broadcast several times throughout the program, most listeners did not pay attention to the announcements that said that the story was fictional, and the highways of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were jammed for hours with people trying to escape the invasion. Thousands of people across America panicked and took measures to protect their homes from the Martians.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Volleyball team on their effort and enthusiasm last night against Many. Calvary will be in action again this weekend, when they travel to Natchitoches for a Saturday tournament.
This Friday, Calvary plays Peabody in the first home game of the 2017 varsity football season. Friday will be Spirit Day with a “Peace-out Peabody” theme. Everyone is encouraged to wear a tie-dyed shirt and jeans on Friday. We will be on pep rally schedule.
Student admission to each of the 5 home football game this year will be $5.00, but we are making a Student Season Pass for all five games available to you for $20 – that’s a savings of $5 for you. You can then use that $5 you saved to buy a couple of snow cones at the game! Student season passes can be purchased from Mrs. McCartney in the Athletics Office.

On this date in 1830, in response to arguments about whether a machine would ever replace natural power, a race was held between a horse and the first train locomotive built in America on a nine-mile course outside Baltimore, Maryland. The locomotive had some mechanical difficulties, and the horse won easily, convincing most of the onlookers that the steam train would never replace the wagon train.

Congratulations to our Middle School Cavaliers on their 26-14 victory over Cedar Creek yesterday. Landry Lyddy hit Caden Flowers on a long pass to open the scoring, and Chase Stripland had a big night, scoring a touchdown and a two point conversion on offense. Defensively, Chase had an interception, and Zeke Toups and Caleb Wardell both recovered Cedar Creek fumbles.
Congratulations to our CBA sophomores on their Powder Puff victories last night. The Sophomores defeated the Seniors 12-9 in a hard-fought championship game. Thank you to Mrs. Rutledge, Mrs. Randolph, and everyone who worked hard to make the evening a success.

Happy Birthday today to Molly McDowell
On this date in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem which was later set to music and became the song we know as The Star Spangled Banner – our national anthem. The poem, originally titled “The Defence of Fort McHenry” was written as Mr. Key watched the fort being bombarded at night by British warships during the War of 1812. The sight of a lone United States flag still flying at daybreak inspired the famous words we sing today. Today, you can see that same flag that flew over Fort McHenry in 1814 in the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.

Audrey Baldwin and Payton Bordelon led the JV in Serving Aces. Gracie Hart and Liyah Sias topped the kills for JV with 2 each. In the varsity game, Gussie Treadway, Claire Smith, and Kaylin Little had outstanding nights serving. Jenna Fielder, Madilyn Sells and Kaylin Little led the team in kills. Kendyl White recorded 17 assists in 47 attempts with 0 errors.

But with strong hitting from Jenna Fielder, Madilyn Sells, Gussie Treadway, RobiDonna Thomas, Audrey Baldwin and Kendyl White, CBA had 25 kills. This week CBA volleyball is ranked #6 in the state for Division 4-2A.
Congratulations, also, to our Middle School football team on their 53-12 victory over the Southside Titans last evening. The defense forced several turnovers, including a pick-six by Drew Bickham. Christian Otzenberger was outstanding on defense and was a dominant force from his defensive end position.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Volleyball Team, who inaugurated our new gym floor last night with victories over Huntington: the JV won both sets, led by Audrey Baldwin, who served 15 times and had 15 aces. The varsity won 25-12; 25-15; 25-15, led by Kendyl White, who had 16 aces out of 23 serves, 21 assists, and 39 ball handling attempts with 0 errors.
