Today is Wednesday, May 18.  We are on a half-day final exam bell schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Lavorziesa Houston.

On this date in 1980, in Washington State, Mt. St. Helens erupted after 93 years of silence.  The volcanic blast was 500 times more powerful than the atomic bomb that leveled Hiroshima.  Steam and ash erupted more than 11 miles into the sky and darkened skies in a 160-mile radius.

Right now, you should be in your 1st hour class.  2nd hour final exams will follow, with early dismissal at 10:45 for middle school and at 11:00 for high school.

Awards assemblies will be tomorrow morning, with middle school at 8:00 in the Dome and high school gathering at 9:50 in the Dome.  Students who have no make-up exams to take will be dismissed after their awards assembly.

There will be no morning announcements tomorrow.

Congratulations to our State Champion Cavalier baseball team.  The Cavaliers defeated Ouachita Christian 12-4 in extra innings on Saturday to take the Division IV Championship.  Thank you, players and coaches, for representing us well this year.

Congratulations to our Calvary Archers who competed in the NASP Eastern Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky this past weekend.  Representing CBA were Collin Sharp, Seth Sharp, Colton McPhearson, Jewel Blakey, and Noah Thomason.

On this date in 1865, the last battle of the American Civil War was fought at Palmito Ranch in south Texas.  There were an estimated 24 casualties in the battle, which took place more than a month after General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, Virginia.

Congratulations to our Cavalier baseball team on their semifinal victory over Covenant Christian last night.  The Cavaliers will now be heading to Hammond to take on Ouachita Christian for the Division IV championship.  That game will be at 11:00 tomorrow morning at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Congratulations to the CBA boys track team for their accomplishments at the State Track Meet last week.  Jackson Burney is the State Champion in the 800 meter run, and the 4 x 400 relay team of John Simon, Kolby Thomas, Jackson Burney, and Landon Sylvie finished third.

On this date in 1955, Kermit the Frog and the Muppets made their first appearance on television.  The show was called Sam and Friends.

Today is the National Day of Prayer.  The National Day of Prayer has been a vital part of our American heritage since 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation.  In 1863, President Lincoln called for a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer”, and in 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.  The National Day of Prayer stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people.

This year’s prayer theme is based on Colossians 2:6-7Exalt the LORD who has established us.

On this date in 1947, Norwegian anthropologist Thor Heyerdahl and five others set out on a balsa wood raft known as the Kon Tiki to prove that Peruvian Indians could have settled the Polynesian islands.  The float trip began in Peru, and it would take 101 days for the raft to complete the 4,300 mile crossing of the Pacific Ocean.

On this date in 1836, Texas won its independence at the Battle of San Jacinto.  The Texas army of volunteers had initially suffered defeat against the superior forces of Mexican dictator Santa Anna, and General Sam Houston’s army had been forced to retreat after the Alamo fell.  On today’s date, however, the Texas volunteers surprised the Mexicans at San Jacinto, and Santa Anna was captured.  In exchange for his life, Santa Anna granted independence to the Republic of Texas.

On this date in 1832, Hot Springs, Arkansas was established as the first national park in the United States by an act of Congress and President Andrew Jackson.  It was made a national park in order to protect the hot springs flowing from the slope of Hot Springs Mountain.

On this date in 1912, the ocean liner, Titanic, on her first trip across the Atlantic, struck an iceberg and began to sink.  The Titanic was over three football fields in length and carried a crew of 885 to take care of just over 1300 passengers.  Provisions for the trip included 60 tons of meat, 63 tons of potatoes, five tons of cereal, three tons of butter, 40,000 eggs and 72,000 apples and oranges.  The ship had been at sea for only four days on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England to New York City when she hit the iceberg on today’s date in 1912.

Congratulations to our Cavalier boys’ tennis team regional champions.  They will now be going to ULM to represent Calvary in the state tennis tournament in two weeks.  Zach Hicks and Jake Brown won the finals in boys’ doubles.  Chase Stripland, Miles Williams, Mason Batts, Bryce Colvin and Cayden Simmons all made it to the quarterfinals and qualified for State.

On this date in 1945, American soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald, Germany.  At the time of liberation, Buchenwald held thousands of prisoners, including Elie Wiesel, who a few years later wrote the book, Night, which many of you have read, about his experiences in Buchenwald and Auschwitz.

On this date in 1877, Emile Berliner invented the microphone.  Good thing, too, because Alexander Graham Bell’s company trying to develop the telephone was nearly bankrupt and in desperate need of something to save it from financial ruin.  The two in inventors came up with a way to attach Mr. Berliner’s microphone to a wooden box, add a crank, an earpiece, and some wires…and the telephone was born.

In the girls 200 Medley Relay, Liberty Haase, Jamie Horne, Claire Roper, and Landry Hearron placed 7th, and in the boys’ division, Jackson Morton, Jeffrey Cochran, Eli Haase, and Sam Ponder finished 8th.  In the girls 200 Freestyle, Liberty Haase was 11th, and in the boys 200 Free, Josh Roper finished 3rd and Eli Haase 10thClair Roper won the 200 IM and Jamie Horne placed 5th.  Zach Ponder was 6th, and Sam Ponder 15th in the boys 200 IM.  Jeffrey Cochran was 2nd in the 100 Butterfly.  Josh Roper finished 5th in the 100 Freestyle, and Jeffrey Cochran won the 500 Freestyle.   The 200 Free Relay girls’ team of Jamie Horne, Landry Hearron, Liberty Haase, and Claire Roper placed 7th, and the boys’ team of Eli Haase, Zach Ponder, Josh Roper, and Jeffrey Cochran won the boys’ division.  Claire Roper was 2nd and Liberty Haase 7th in the girls’ 100 Backstroke, and Zach Ponder was 5th for the boys.  Jamie Horne took 4th in the girls 100 Breaststroke, and the boys’ relay team of Zach Ponder, Jackson Morton, Sam Ponder, and Josh Roper placed 5th in the 400 Free Relay. As a combined team, Calvary finished 5th out of 28 Division III schools.  Great job, Cavaliers!  Thank you for representing CBA well this year.

On this date in 1999, an 18-month-old baby girl fell off a suspension bridge in Vancouver, Canada and fell 230 feet to a rocky ledge below.  The rescue team that descended into the canyon to retrieve her little body found her alive and crying.  She survived the 230-foot fall with some bruises but no broken bones or serious injury.  Doctors who examined her called it a miracle.  Today let’s celebrate God’s love and protection.

On today’s date in 1928, Scottish doctor Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic.  Alexander Fleming grew up in a very poor family but was able to get an education through scholarships paid for by the family of a boy his father had rescued from a peat bog…which is like quicksand.  Since 1928, many people who would have otherwise died from infection have been saved by penicillin – one of whom was Sir Winston Churchill, who was the Prime Minister of England who rallied his nation to resist the attack by Nazi Germany during World War II.  And it was Winston Churchill who as a boy had been rescued by Mr. Fleming from the peat bog and whose family had paid for Alexander Fleming to become a doctor.

On this day in 31 B.C., following the death of Julius Caesar, the Roman leader Octavian defeated the armies of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.  Octavian then changed his name to Augustus Caesar and was the emperor in Luke Chapter 2 who decreed that all the world should be taxed and led to Joseph and Mary going to Bethlehem because Joseph was of the house and lineage of David.

On this day in 1456, the printing of the Gutenberg Bible was completed. Only 180 Bibles were printed, which would seem like a small run until you consider that the total number of books in all of Europe in 1456 was only about 30,000.  Of the original 180, fewer than 25 complete Bibles exist today.
