On this date in 1951, an aspiring baseball pitcher named Fidel Castro was ejected from a Winter League baseball game in Cuba after hitting a batter with a pitch.  He later gave up his hopes for a baseball career and took up politics.

Congratulations to our varsity basketball teams on their effort and success at Homer last night.

Congratulations to our Cavalier soccer teams on their matches with Evangel last night.

This year’s Cavalier Saturday Night CAVS Club auction will be this Saturday.  Doors will open at 5:30.

Today is Tuesday, January 21.  We are on chapel schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Anna Milam and Denham Smith.

On this date in 1979, Super Bowl 13 was played in Miami, Florida.  For the ticket price of $30 you could have had a prime seat and watched the Pittsburgh Steelers defeat the Dallas Cowboys 35-31.  The game’s most valuable player award went to Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw.

Congratulations to our varsity boys’ basketball team on their victory over Magnolia Charter Friday night.

Congratulations to our Cavalier wrestlers who represented CBA in the Louisiana Classic in New Orleans this past weekend.

Don’t forget the CAVS Club auction this Saturday.  Cavalier Saturday Night will begin at 5:30.

Best Wishes tonight to our varsity girls and boys basketball teams as they travel to Homer.  The girls’ game will tip-off at 6:00, followed by the boys at 7:15.

Best Wishes also, to our varsity soccer teams as they host Evangel.  The boys are scheduled to play first and will kick-off at 6:00, with the girls’ match to follow around 7:45.

On this date in 1896, the first five-player college basketball game was played in Iowa City, Iowa.  Up until then, games had been played by however many players were available.  The inventor of the game of basketball, Dr. James Naismith, had nine players on his teams in P.E. class, and nine players had been common until today’s date in 1896.

On this date in 1967, the first Super Bowl was played.  The National Football League champion Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, champions of the American Football League, 35-10.

Last night’s varsity soccer games with Sterlington were postponed due to the weather.  The soccer teams will again be in action tomorrow when they travel to Bossier High.

Happy Birthday today to Andrew Otzenberger and Christopher Thomas.

On this date in 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first United States President to fly in an airplane while in office.  He flew from Miami to Morocco, where he met with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to discuss World War II.

Congratulations to our 7th grade basketball team on their success last night against Herndon.

Students and staff, you are invited to attend Andrew Otzenberger’s college signing this afternoon at 3:30 in the Fireside Room.  Andrew will be signing a National Letter of Intent to attend Abilene Christian University and play tennis.  You are invited to be a part of his celebration this afternoon.

There will be a meeting for the fishing team this evening at 5:30 in the cafeteria.

Today is Monday, January 13.  We are on regular schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Andrew Duncan and Brynn Lovitt.

On this date in 1957, the Wham-O toy company began producing a flying disc which they called the Pluto Platter – named after the farthest planet in our solar system, since Americans of the 1950’s were intrigued by space travel and UFO’s.  The idea for a flying disc dated back to the 1920’s, when students at Yale University played catch with pie tins from the nearby Frisbee Baking Company.  The Pluto Platter did not really catch on with customers, so the Wham-O company changed the name to Frisbee…and the rest is flying disc history.

Congratulations to our Cavalier wrestlers on their success in the Brusly tournament this weekend.

Congratulations to our Calvary powerlifters who competed at West Monroe on Saturday.

Today is Friday, January 10.  We are on regular schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Kyla Hadwin.  Happy Birthday to Kyelor Coburn tomorrow and to Ian Mahoney on Sunday.

On this date in 1770, rhubarb made its first appearance in America.  The first shipment of rhubarb was sent to the United States from London.  Benjamin Franklin, who was visiting England, sent the plant to a friend in Philadelphia.

If you are a middle school student who wants to play spring soccer, the CBA middle school soccer teams for 7th and 8th grade  girls and boys are now forming.  Practice begins on Monday.  See Ms. Miller in the Athletics Office if you are interested in playing.

Monday will be LSU Day at CBA.  Students and Staff will be allowed to wear LSU gear, including jeans, or dress in their Calvary uniform.

Students and staff, you are invited to attend Andrew Otzenberger’s college signing next Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 in the Fireside Room.  Andrew is the first Calvary young man to sign with a division 1 college for tennis.  You are invited to be a part of his celebration on Tuesday.

Happy Birthday today to Sydney Floyd, Raelee Jackson, Braydon Wilson, and Madelynn Wynne.

On this date in 1984, Wendy’s first TV commercial starring Clara Pellar was seen.  Her question of “Where’s the Beef?” soon became a nation-wide slogan and appeared on baseball caps, t-shirts, greeting cards and countless other items, making the elderly Mrs. Peller a television star all across America.  That little bit of nostalgia was for you staff  members who remember 1984.  For you students, on this date in 1902, the New York State Legislature introduced a bill that outlawed flirting in public – laying the foundation for future PDA policies in American High Schools.

The CBA middle school soccer teams for 7th and 8th grade  girls and boys are now forming.  Practice begins next Monday, January 13.  The season will be February and March. See Ms. Miller in the Athletics Office if you are interested in playing.

On this date in 1815, the Battle of New Orleans began.  General Andrew Jackson commanded the American forces that defeated the invading British.  His success in this battle put General Jackson on the road to eventually becoming the 7th President of the United States.

Congratulations to our Cavalier basketball teams on their success yesterday.

On this date in 1887, Thomas Stevens completed the first around-the-world bicycle trip.  He had started his journey from San Francisco in April 1884.  Mr. Stevens and his bike traveled 13,500 miles in almost three years’ time, arriving back in San Francisco on today’s date in 1887.
