Today is Friday, September 25.  We are on regular schedule today.

On this date in 1513, Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa discovered the Pacific Ocean.  As the first European to see it, he named it the South Sea and claimed it for the King of Spain.

If you are interested in Student Council, please speak to Mrs. Fitzwater in room C-110 before 3:00 today.

There will be a Student Council meeting during lunch next Tuesday in room C-110.

Today is the deadline to order a Calvary softball t-shirt.  Order forms are in the Academy Office and due by 3:00 this afternoon.

Today is also the deadline to order a spirit t-shirt for next Thursday’s high school football game with Byrd. Shirts are $20. Orders should be turned in to the office and orders are due by 3:00.

Any high school girl interested in playing girls’ basketball this year, sign up in Coach Hearron’s room, C-106.

The Calvary Powerlifting team is accepting new members for the middle, JV, and high school boys’ and girls’ teams.  Information and sign up sheets are in Coach Vandy’s room, C-107.

Happy Birthday today to Jim Henson

On this date in 1934, Babe Ruth played his last game as a New York Yankee player.  In his last time at bat, after hitting a long fly ball that barely went foul, “The Babe” was walked.  At first base, he called for a pinch runner, got a baseball from the home plate umpire, signed it, and then trotted out to the right field stands and gave it to a boy who had been hit on the arm by the long foul ball.

On this date in 1893, Frank Duryea took what is believed to be the first gasoline-powered automobile for a test drive.  The first drive went for about 600 yards down Frank’s street in Springfield, Massachusetts before the transmission gave out.

On this date in 1620, the Mayflower, with 102 passengers on board, departed from Plymouth, England and headed for the New World.  This is the 400th anniversary of the voyage across the Atlantic would take over three months, as the little ship would not arrive at the location we know as Plymouth Rock on the coast of Massachusetts until December.

On this date in 1928, Scottish doctor Alexander Fleming discovered the world’s first antibiotic, the bacteria killer we know as penicillin.  Dr. Fleming was knighted for his discovery and became Sir Alexander Fleming.

On this date in 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner, a poem originally known as “Defense of Fort McHenry”, after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, Maryland, during the War of 1812.  The song became the official U.S. National Anthem on March 3, 1931.

On this date in 2001, four airliners were hijacked in the United States and intentionally crashed.  Two of the planes hit New York City’s World Trade Center twin towers, which collapsed shortly afterward.  Another plane hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane was crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.

On this date in 1913, the Lincoln Highway opened.  It was the first paved coast-to-coast highway in the United States and the inspiration for our modern interstate highway system.  Today, Interstate 80 is the highway most closely aligned with the original Lincoln Highway route.

On this date in 1783, the Revolutionary War between Great Britain and the newly created United States ended with the Treaty of Paris.  For those of you who don’t care about details but only want to know who won…check with your history teacher.

On this date in 490 BC, a Greek runner by the name of Phidippides of Athens was sent on a mission to seek help for the Athenian army against the invading Persian army as they fought at a place called Marathon.  Phidippides left the battle and ran to the city of Sparta, 26 miles away to get help.  Two days later, he ran the 26 miles again, returning to Marathon to tell the Athenian army that the Spartan troops would not be coming to help.  The Athenians were able to still win the battle at Marathon, and although mortally wounded, Phidippides took to the road again, running to Athens to carry the news of the victory.  His last words were, “Rejoice, we are victorious!”  In honor of Phidippides’ runs, the race we call the marathon became part of the Olympic Games in 1896.  385 yards were added to the 26-mile marathon in 1908 so that the runners could finish in front of King Edward VII’s royal box in the stadium.  This made the distance 26.2 miles…still the official marathon distance today.

On this date in 1945, the United States received official word of Japan’s formal surrender that ended World War II.  Although September 1 in the United States, in Japan it was actually September 2.  The surrender ceremony took place aboard the USS Missouri.  The war ended six years and one day after it began.
