On this date in 1941, in just over three hours from now, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes would descend on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where they would destroy or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels and over 300 airplanes.  More than 2,400 Americans would die in the attack, a major part of America’s Pacific Fleet would be destroyed, and the United States would be catapulted into World War II.

Today is Tuesday, December 6.  Today is Saint Nicholas Day. We are on chapel schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Bailey Barber.

On this date in 1964, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first aired on NBC-TV.  Rudolph has been shown every year since 1964, making it the longest-running Christmas TV special in history.  CBS bought exclusive rights to the show in 1972, and unlike other Christmas specials, Rudolph can only be seen on CBS.

Today is Monday, December 5.  This is National Hand-Washing Awareness Week, and we are on regular schedule today.

On this date in 1848, President James K. Polk announced that gold had been discovered in California.  His announcement triggered the California Gold Rush of 1849, when more than 300,000 gold seekers would head to California hoping to get rich.  More than any other single event, the Gold Rush of 1849 resulted in California becoming a state one year later and San Francisco having a name for their professional football team 97 years later.

There will be a Tennis Parent Meeting tonight at 6:00 at Southern Hills Tennis Center.

There will be a Fishing Team meeting in the cafeteria next Tuesday, December 6 at 5:30.  Anyone who has signed up to fish Junior High or High School needs to attend this meeting.

On this date in 1927, the Ford Motor Company unveiled their first Model A automobile, the successor to the Model T, at New York’s Waldorf Hotel.  The new car was priced at $395 for the 2-seat model and $495 for the four-seater.  By early spring, there were 800,000 more orders for the Model A than there were cars available.

Thank you to the Student Council members who decorated the high school hall last night.  You did a great job of bringing the Christmas spirit to your hallway.  On Monday we will be announcing the guidelines for this year’s high school door decorating competition.

On this date in 1913, the first drive-in gas station opened.  Until then, drivers got gas for their cars at general stores, hardware stores, or blacksmith shops.  The first gas station was opened by Gulf Oil Company and was in Pittsburgh, PA.

On this date in 1858, John Mason received a patent for his invention of a pepper shaker with a screw-on cap.  Little did Mr. Mason know at the time of his invention about the practical jokes that his shaker would create in dining rooms around the world in the future.

Today is Monday, November 28.  Welcome back to CBA.  We hope that all of you had a good Thanksgiving and enjoyed your break.  We are on regular schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Lily Blessing and Datreel Scott.

On this date in 1924, the organizers of the very first Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade decided to hold it again the next year after seeing the huge crowd and the success of the parade.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Swim Team, who competed at the LHSAA Division IV State Championships just before Thanksgiving break.

In the girls’ division, Claire Roper won both the 200 individual medley and the 100-meter backstroke. Liberty Haase placed 9th in the 50-meter freestyle and 6th in the 100 backstroke. And our Cavalier girls relay team of Liberty Haase, Katie Kent, Claire Roper, and Audrey Wages placed 6th in the 200-meter medley relay and 9th in the 200 freestyle relay.  As a team, the Calvary girls took 9th place in the girls’ division.

In the boys’ division, Josh Roper won both the 50 and 100-meter freestyles.  Zachary Ponder won both the 200 individual medley and the 100-meter backstroke.  Sam Ponder placed second in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.  Eli Haase placed 4th in the 200-meter freestyle and 6th in the 100 freestyle.  Jackson Morton was 4th in the 500-meter freestyle and 5th in the 200 freestyle.  Jack Hillebrand placed 15th in the 50-meter freestyle.  And the boys’ relay team of Josh Roper, Zachary Ponder, Sam Ponder, and Eli Haase won the 200-meter freestyle relay and placed 2nd in the 200-meter medley relay.  The six Calvary boys took overall 2nd place in the boys’ division.

Congratulations, also, to Liberty Haase and Josh Roper who received All-Academic recognition for maintaining a 4.0 GPA during their four years of high school.

Congratulations to our Cavalier varsity football team and coaches on their fine season.  The Cavaliers traveled to Baton Rouge on Friday and fell to Dunham 50-35 in the state quarterfinals.  Thank you, players and coaches, for representing us well this year.

On this date in 1985, quarterback Joe Theismann of the Washington Redskins broke his leg after being hit from behind by Lawrence Taylor of the New York Giants.  The injury ended Theismann’s 12-year NFL career.  It also elevated the position of left tackle and later served as an introduction to the movie, The Blind Side.

Thank you to all of you who worked to make yesterday’s middle school Thanksgiving Field Day a success.  Your time and efforts are appreciated.  And thank you to the Millers for sharing their home.

Today is Thursday, November 17.  We are on Thanksgiving Feast schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Tripp Jones.

On this date in 1968, what has become known as the “Heidi Game” happened.  NBC-TV cut away from the final minutes of the New York Jets – Oakland Raiders football game to begin a TV special, “Heidi” on schedule.  The Raiders scored two touchdowns in 9 seconds to come from behind and win the game, but of course the television audience missed all that, and NBC was flooded with telephone calls.  The concept of program delay was instituted by all the TV networks shortly after the Heidi Game.

The high school Thanksgiving Feast is today.  All food that you bring for the Feast should go directly to the Dome, so if you have food now, take it to the Dome.  If your parent brings it later this morning, take it to the Dome.  Make sure your food is cooked and labeled with your grade.

On this date in 1875, a Philadelphia dentist, Dr. William Bonwell, was issued a patent for his invention of a mallet used to hammer gold fillings into cavities.  Dr. Bonwell’s frst patient was reported to have said “YeeeeeOWWWWW!” when the mallet hit the exposed nerve of his tooth…to which Dr. Bonwell responded with the well-known comeback line, “Oops!”

On this date in 1889, a New York newspaper reporter named Nellie Bly began her attempt to travel around the world in fewer than 80 days, trying to beat the time of Jules Verne’s fictitious Englishman, Phileas Fogg.  Mrs. Bly would succeed, as she would complete her journey in January – in just over 72 days.  Like Jules Verne, she wrote a book about her adventure, Around the World in 72 Days, which became an immediate best seller.

There will be rehearsal today for tonight’s National Honor Society’s induction ceremony.  New members and officers will report to the sanctuary at the beginning of 6th period.

Today is Friday, November 11.  We are on regular schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Jewel Blakey.  Happy Birthday tomorrow to Cade Lazarus, Elissa Pollitt, and Ronald Strong.  Happy Birthday on Sunday to Abigail Haley.

On this date in 1918, the Great War, known to us as World War I, came to an end with the signing of an armistice at 11:00 a.m. on this, the 11th day of the 11th month.  Today was declared a national holiday by Congress as a recognition of World War I, but as America fought more wars and more Americans died defending freedom, Veterans Day has become a time to remember all the wars and the sacrifices of all the men and women who have served in America’s Armed Forces through the years.

Today’s date also marks the anniversary of the Pilgrims arriving in America in 1620 and the signing of the Mayflower Compact, which gives thanks and glory to God and dedicates this new land to the advancement of the Christian faith.  The Mayflower Compact played an important role in developing our United States Constitution.

Our Lady Cavs volleyball team saw their season end yesterday as they fell in five sets to Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs.  Congratulations, girls and coaches, on an excellent season.  Thank you for representing CBA well this year.

On this date in 1874, the Republican Party was for the first time symbolized as an elephant.  In the magazine, Harper’s Weekly, a political cartoonist named Thomas Nast drew a satirical drawing of an elephant about to fall into a big hole – a reference to President Ulysses S. Grant’s possible bid for a 3rd presidential term.

Congratulations to our Lady Cavs volleyball team on their victory over Thomas Jefferson last Friday night.  The Lady Cavs now advance to the playoff quarterfinals and will take on Notre Dame in Lafayette at the Cajun Dome on Thursday.

Congratulations to the Cavalier varsity football team on their victory over Loyola on Friday.  The Cavaliers will have a bye in the opening round of the Division III playoffs and host a second-round game on November 18.

Saturday’s Middle School State Championship Cross-Country Meet in Ruston was cancelled, ending the middle school season.  Congratulations, eighth graders Hollis Brown, Tyde Johnson, Noah Thomason, and Preston Walton and sixth grader Beaux Lofton on a fine season and thank you for representing CBA well.

There will be a Parent Meeting tonight for parents of eighth grade students who are interested in the Natchitoches Christmas trip.  That meeting will be at 6:00 in the Cafeteria.

On this date in 1922, an archeologist named Howard Carter discovered the entry to the lost tomb of Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamen.  King Tut had come to power at the tender age of 9 years old and was Pharaoh of Egypt until his death at the ripe old age of 18 – back in 1352 BC.  His tomb had been hidden under a temporary house that had been built for workers excavating the tomb of another pharaoh in an area known as the Valley of the Kings.

Congratulations to our Cavalier high school cross country boys’ team!  All three Cavaliers ran great at the Regional Meet in Ruston yesterday, finishing in the top 20 and qualifying for state.

Jackson Burney finished 4th, Ty Knight - 5th, and Owen Thomason - 16th.  The State Cross-Country meet will be Monday, November 14th at Northwestern State University.

There will be a tryout for the middle school boys’ basketball team tomorrow afternoon, from 2:00-3:30 at Calvary.  Boys in grades 6, 7, & 8 are eligible to try out.

Congratulations to our Cavalier swim team on their success at the Regional Swim Meet in Ruston on Saturday.  In the boys’ division, Zachary Ponder won the 200 Individual Medley and finished 2nd in the 100 Back.  Josh Roper was 3rd in the 50 Freestyle and 2nd in the 100 Freestyle.  The team of Sam Ponder, Zachary Ponder, Joshua Roper and Eli Haase won the 200-meter Medley Relay.  In the girls’ division, Claire Roper finished 2nd in the 200 Individual Medley and 3rd in the 100-meter Backstroke.  Other Cavaliers headed for State are Liberty Haase, Katherine Kent, Audrey Wages, Jack Hillebrand, and Jackson Morton.  We wish all of you the best at State.

The Student Council candy drive for the Calvary Baptist Church Fall Festival was won by the Freshmen! Freshmen will have a free dress day this Thursday, Nov. 3rd.  Thank you to all who donated.

Today is Thursday, October 6.  We are on regular schedule today.

On this date in 1848, the steamship, SS California, left New York Harbor carrying mail and freight for San Francisco, CA.  The Panama Canal had not yet been built, so ships had to travel around Cape Horn at the tip of South America.  The trip from New York to San Francisco would take the California over 4 ½ months, which is a long time for a letter, but it was still much faster than sending it by wagon train, which took twice as long.

Volunteers are still needed for this Saturday’s Zack Williams concert.  Zack is a Christian musical artist and will be performing at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium on October 8.  If you are interested in volunteering, please see Mrs. Groven.

On this date in 1892, the first nighttime football game under electric lights was played.  The game was between Wyoming Seminary of Pennsylvania and Mansfield, Pennsylvania High School.  During the early years of football it was common for a college and high school to play each other.  The lighting system turned out to be inadequate, and the game lasted only 20 minutes.  Both teams agreed to end the game after 10 plays with a 0 to 0 tie after several players had run into a light pole on the field.

Congratulations to our Cavalier swim team on their success at Saturday’s high school swim meet.  Claire Roper won both the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.  The boys’ relay team of Eli Haase, Jackson Morton, Zachary Ponder and Josh Roper won both the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle relays.  Josh Roper won the 100 backstroke and finished 3rd in the 50 meter freestyle.  Zachary Ponder won the 100 fly and the 500 freestyle.  Eli Haase took 2nd place in the 200 individual medley. Jack Hillebrand swam a state qualifying time in the 50 meter freestyle.  Great job by all of you Cavaliers who competed on Saturday.

Congratulations to our Calvary cross country runners on their success this past Saturday. At the Turner Tiger Invitational, Hollis Brown took first place in the 7/8th grade division. At the Cedar Creek High School Meet in Ruston, Jackson Burney finished 2nd, Ty Knight was 11th, and Owen Thomason finished in the top 40.

On this date in 490 BC, a Greek runner by the name of Phidippides of Athens was sent on a mission to seek help for the Athenian army against the invading Persian army as they fought at a place called Marathon.  Phidippides ran to the city of Sparta, 26 miles away to get help, then two days later, he ran the 26 miles back to Marathon to join the battle, where he was mortally wounded.  In honor of Phidippides’ runs, the race we call the Marathon was added to the Olympic Games in 1896.  In 1908, 385 yards were added to the 26 miles so that the finish line would be in front of King Edward VII’s seat in the stadium.  This made the distance 26.2 miles – still the official marathon distance today.

On this date in 1883, the volcano on the Indonesian island of Krakatoa exploded, spewing five cubic miles of earth 15 miles high into the atmosphere.  The explosion was 13,000 times more powerful than the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in World War II, and the sound of the explosion was heard over 3,000 miles away.  The shock waves from the volcano circled the earth seven times and created tidal waves 120 feet high.

Middle School softball tryouts for grades 6 through 8 will be held next Monday, August 22, and Tuesday, August 23 from 3:30-4:30 at the high school softball field.

If you would like to join Cross Country, the sign-up sheet is in the Academy Main Office.  The last day to sign-up is next Wednesday, August 24.

This year’s Back-to-School Carnival is this week.  Come have some fun from 5:00 until 8:00 this Friday evening.  Wristbands will be $20 and cover bounce houses and slides.

If you don’t have a current church, please consider coming to Calvary tonight for Wednesday night fellowship and Bible study.  The activities start at 6:30 in the gym.  Everyone is welcome.

Friday will be Spirit Day.  Everyone is encouraged to wear a Calvary shirt and jeans.

On this date in 1877, Thomas Edison, who is known for many inventions, invented the word, Hello.  Hello did not exist before August 15, 1877.  The telephone had recently been invented by Alexander Graham Bell, and people needed something to say when they answered it.  Mr. Bell was all for the word Ahoy to be the greeting, but Mr. Edison pushed for Hello, and Hello  eventually won out.

On this date in 1874, Mr. Harry Parmelee of New Haven, Connecticut received a patent for the lawn sprinkler, giving us a good way to keep our lawns watered and something to play in and cool off in hot weather.
