On this date in 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg, Germany Palace Church. This marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

There will be an NHS meeting in the Worship Center next Thursday, November 6th during lunch.

NJHS will meet in the Next Gen room on Thursday, November 6th during lunch. Students should bring their lunch.

NHS is sponsoring "Fill a Pantry, Fill a Heart”, a project to donate to the Food Bank. Please bring canned, boxed, or bagged food items to your homeroom class from now until November 5th. Seniors may participate by bringing their items to their first class of the day. NHS members must bring 10 items for our Fall Project. With new government guidelines, the Food Bank is really going to need our help to serve the community. The alternate service will be to help clean up after the football games.

The NJHS Induction Ceremony at 6 pm and the NHS Induction Ceremony at 7 pm will both be in the Worship Center on Monday, November 10th. All members, new and old are expected to be present.

On this date in 1938, CBS Radio presented a radio show called The War of the Worlds, which was a music program interrupted by fake news bulletins saying that Martians had landed in a field in New Jersey. Although the story was fictional, the highways of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were jammed for hours with people trying to escape the Martian invasion.

On this date in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor by President Grover Cleveland. The statue was presented to the American people by the French and is green in color because it is made of copper, which turns green by oxidation. The statue's full name is Liberty Enlightening the World.

Qualification playoffs had been held in all 48 states, and 200 finalists from 30 different states descended on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee for the national finals. J.K. Scott won the tournament and the prize money, becoming the first miniature golf national champion.

On this date in 1800, the United States Congress met in Washington, DC for the first time. For the previous ten years, Congress had met in Philadelphia. Thomas Jefferson was the leader of the Senate and opened the session in the half-completed Capitol Building, even though several members of congress had not been able to get to Washington because of a snowstorm.

This morning, the homecoming parade will begin at 9:00, followed by the pep rally at 10:00.

Calvary Baptist Church is collecting prom, homecoming, bridesmaid, and any other semi-formal dresses for El Salvador orphan girls. If you have a dress to donate, please bring it to the hanging racks in the church foyer tomorrow.

On this date in 1987, an 18-month-old baby girl named Jessica McClure was rescued from an abandoned well that she had fallen into in Midland, Texas. Baby Jessica had crawled into an open 8-inch well casing and then fallen 22 feet straight down before her little body became stuck. Rescue workers worked non-stop for 58 hours before they were able to bring her to safety on today's date in 1987.

On this date in 1928, a Scottish doctor named Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the world's first antibiotic. Alexander Fleming grew up in a very poor family but was able to go to school through scholarships paid for by the family of a boy his father had rescued from a peat bog, which is like quicksand. Since 1928, many people who would have otherwise died from infection have been saved by penicillin - one of those people was Winston Churchill, who was the British Prime Minister who rallied his nation to resist Nazi Germany during World War II. And it was Winston Churchill who as a boy had been rescued from the peat bog and whose family paid for Alexander Fleming to go to school and become a doctor.

On this date in 490 BC, a Greek runner by the name of Phidippides was sent on a mission to seek help for the Athenian army against the invading Persian army as they fought at a place called Marathon. Phidippides ran to the city of Sparta, 26 miles away to get help, then two days later he ran the 26 miles back to Marathon to rejoin the battle, where he was mortally wounded. In honor of Phidippides' runs, the race we call the marathon was added to the Olympic games in 1896. Twelve years later, 385 yards were added to the 26 miles so that the finish line would be in front of King Edward VII's seat in the Olympic stadium. This made the distance 26.2 miles - still the official marathon distance today,

On this date in 1953, a 13-year-old Connecticut 8th grader named David Mullany, working with his dad to come up with a ball they could play baseball with in the backyard, invented the Wiffle Ball. The original ball was plastic, with oblong holes on the top half and a solid bottom half. The ball was easy to throw, but difficult to hit - when the batter swung and missed, the boys called it a "wiff", leading them to name the invention "Wiffle Ball".
