On this date in 1967, the popular TV show, Gilligan's Island, aired for the last time on CBS-TV. There had been 98 episodes during the three seasons that the show ran. It ended with the seven castaways still stranded on the island because the writers expected to do a fourth season.

FCA will host a pancake breakfast tomorrow morning at 7:20 in the Dome. All students in middle and high school are invited to attend.

Today is Tuesday, September 2. Welcome back after your long weekend. We are on chapel schedule today.

Happy Birthday today to Addie Diehl, Aubrey Gill, and Grayson Rogers.

On this date in 490 BC, a Greek runner by the name of Phidippides was sent on a mission to seek help for the Athenian army against the invading Persian army as they fought at a place called Marathon. Phidippides ran to the city of Sparta, 26 miles away to get help, then two days later he ran the 26 miles back to Marathon to rejoin the battle, where he was mortally wounded. In honor of Phidippides' runs, the race we call the marathon was added to the Olympic games in 1896. Twelve years later, 385 yards were added to the 26 miles so that the finish line would be in front of King Edward VII's seat in the Olympic stadium. This made the distance 26.2 miles - still the official marathon distance today,

On this date in 1921, the owner of the Acme Meat Packing Company in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Mr. J.E. Clair, started a football team for his town. Mr. Clair paid tribute to the people who worked in his packing plant by naming the team the Green Bay Packers.

On this date in 1875, Matthew Webb became the first person to swim across the English Channel. He trained for two years for his swim, and on today's date he successfully made the crossing from Dover, England to the coast of France in 21 hours and 45 minutes.

On this date in 1953, a 13-year-old Connecticut 8th grader named David Mullany, working with his dad to come up with a ball they could play baseball with in the backyard, invented the Wiffle Ball. The original ball was plastic, with oblong holes on the top half and a solid bottom half. The ball was easy to throw, but difficult to hit - when the batter swung and missed, the boys called it a "wiff", leading them to name the invention "Wiffle Ball".

The Shreveport - Bossier area has a team, the Twin City Knockers, who skate at the Bossier Civic Center.
