Happy Birthday today to Sterling Rimmer

On this date in 1863, seven score and 17 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln spoke at the dedication of a new national cemetery near Gettysburg, PA.  Although the President was not the keynote speaker at the dedication, his 3-minute Gettysburg Address, written on a small piece of paper while on the train traveling to Gettysburg, is considered one of the greatest speeches in the history of the United States.

Three CBA students who take from Carla Goben’s piano studio were selected to perform in a Judges Choice Honors Recital.  Congratulations Shelby Simmons, Savannah Pearce, and Addison Stevenson.

Happy Birthday today to Tripp Jones

On this date in 1968, the Heidi Game took place on NBC-TV.  With the New York Jets leading the Oakland Raiders 32-29 in the final seconds of the game, NBC cut away from the game to stay on schedule with the movie, Heidi.  Oakland then scored two touchdowns in nine seconds to beat the Jets 43-32, but of course the TV audience missed all that.  NBC was flooded with calls, and the concept of program delay was born.

This week’s spirit theme will be America Out Arcadia, and you are invited to dress in red, white, and blue.  This week’s varsity football game will be Thursday night.  Both Thursday and Friday will be Spirit Days this week.

Thursday’s pep rally and the high school Thanksgiving Feast have been cancelled.  Thursday’s middle school field trip will be held as scheduled.

On this date in 1875, a Philadelphia dentist, Dr. William Bonwell, was granted a patent for his invention – a mallet used to hammer gold fillings into tooth cavities.  Dr. Bonwell’s first patient was reported to have said, “YeeeeOwwww!” when the filling hit the exposed nerve of his tooth…to which Dr. Bonwell responded with the well-known comeback line, “Oops.”

On this date in 1918, the Great War – known to us as World War I – came to an end with the signing of an armistice at 11:00 a.m. on this, the 11th day of the 11th month.  Today was declared a national holiday by Congress as a recognition of the end of the Great War, but as America fought more wars and more Americans died defending freedom, Veterans Day has become a time to remember all the wars and the sacrifices of all the men and women who have served in America’s Armed Forces through the years.

Also today’s date marks the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ landing on American soil and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in 1620, which gives thanks and Glory to God and dedicates this new land to the advancement of the Christian faith. The Mayflower Compact played an important part in the building of our Constitution.

Congratulations to all the participants in last night’s PowderPuff games, and special congratulations to the Seniors, who narrowly beat the Freshmen for this year’s championship.

On this date in 1908, the first Gideon Bible was put in a hotel room.  Despite challenges in recent years to block the Bibles, the Gideon organization is now in its 113th year of making Bibles available to travelers.

On this date in 1938, Nazi troops destroyed Jewish stores and homes throughout Germany and burned down 267 synagogues.  91 people were killed and over 30,000 Jews were arrested during a night that became known as the Night of Broken Glass.

Congratulations to our Lady Cavs volleyball team on their record-setting season.  The Lady Cavs fell to Northlake Christian in their second-round match on Friday, finishing their season with an outstanding 18-2 record.  Thank you for representing CBA well this year.

Congratulations to our football Cavaliers on their homecoming victory over Plain Dealing Friday night.  This week’s theme will be Western, so plan to dress up like a cowboy or cowgirl on Friday as Calvary takes on Haynesville.

The CBA boys’ basketball team will host Woodlawn for a scrimmage this evening at 5:30. Admission is $5.

On this date in 1986, the Dryer’s and Edy’s Ice Cream Company took out a $250,000 insurance policy to cover the taste buds of their ice cream tester, John Harrison.  Mr. Harrison was the inventor of the Cookies-n-Cream flavor, and this was the first taste buds insurance policy ever written.

The CBA Homecoming Parade is this morning, and teachers will be escorting their first hour classes to the parade route at 8:40.  The parade is scheduled to begin at 9:00.

After the parade, students will go to their assigned class section in Barker Stadium for a pep rally at 10:00.  Following the pep rally we will be on regular schedule.

On this date in 1935, the board game, Monopoly, was introduced. The original purpose of the game was educational – to teach the principle of a land value tax. Even though there have been several modified versions, the official setting of the properties on a monopoly board is Atlantic City, NJ.

As we continue Homecoming Week activities, this afternoon we will have Field Day.  Fifth hour class will dismiss at 12:50, and Field Day competition will begin at 1:00 at Barker Stadium.  Make sure that you sit in the bleacher area assigned to your class.

Tomorrow’s theme will be Green and Gold from Head to Toe, and we will be on regular bell schedule with some morning modifications. Students will be released from first hour at 8:40, and the parade will begin at 9:00. Students will then gather in Barker Stadium for a pep rally at 10:00.

On this date in 1922, archeologist Howard Carter discovered the entry to the lost tomb of Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamen.  King Tut had come into power when he was nine years old and was Pharaoh until his death at the ripe old age of 18, back in 1352 BC.  His tomb was discovered beneath a house that had been built for workers excavating the tomb of Ramses IV.

Congratulations to our Lady Cavs volleyball team on their first-round play yesterday.  The Lady Cavs now advance to the second round scheduled for Friday.

Congratulations, also, to our middle school football team on a fine season.  Yesterday they finished the 2020 season with a victory over Louisianimals.
