Happy Birthday today to Donovan Teddlie.

On this date 1954, in Oak Grove, Alabama, Elizabeth Hodges became the first person in the United States to be injured by an extraterrestrial object.  At 2:46 in the afternoon on today’s date a grapefruit sized meteorite crashed through her roof, bounced off a piece of furniture, and hit her in the side as she was taking a nap on the couch.  Even in the bright afternoon daylight the meteorite fireball had been visible in three states as it streaked through the atmosphere.

The PowderPuff football games begin this evening at 5:30. If you are playing or coaching, make sure your team is together in Barker Stadium by 5:15 and ready to start the game at 5:30.  Remember that you must have a powderpuff shirt to come down on the field.  If you bought a shirt but have not yet picked it up, you need to see Mrs. Fitzwater.

On this date seven score and 18 years ago, President Abraham Lincoln spoke at the dedication of a new national cemetery near Gettysburg, PA.  Although the President was not the keynote speaker at the dedication, his 3-minute Gettysburg Address, written on a small piece of paper while he was on the train traveling to Gettysburg, is considered one of the greatest speeches in the history of the United States.

Congratulations to our Cavalier Swim Team on their success at the state swim meet yesterday. In the girls 200 Medley Relay, Liberty Haase, Jamie Horne, Claire Roper, and Landry Hearron placed 7th, and in the boys’ division, Jackson Morton, Jeffrey Cochran, Eli Haase, and Sam Ponder finished 8th.  In the girls 200 Freestyle, Liberty Haase was 11th, and in the boys 200 Free, Josh Roper finished 3rd and Eli Haase 10thClair Roper won the 200 IM and Jamie Horne placed 5th.  Zach Ponder was 6th, and Sam Ponder 15th in the boys 200 IM.  Jeffrey Cochran was 2nd in the 100 Butterfly.  Josh Roper finished 5th in the 100 Freestyle, and Jeffrey Cochran won the 500 Freestyle.   The 200 Free Relay girls’ team of Jamie Horne, Landry Hearron, Liberty Haase, and Claire Roper placed 7th, and the boys’ team of Eli Haase, Zach Ponder, Josh Roper, and Jeffrey Cochran won the boys’ division.  Claire Roper was 2nd and Liberty Haase 7th in the girls’ 100 Backstroke, and Zach Ponder was 5th for the boys.  Jamie Horne took 4th in the girls 100 Breaststroke, and the boys’ relay team of Zach Ponder, Jackson Morton, Sam Ponder, and Josh Roper placed 5th in the 400 Free Relay. As a combined team, Calvary finished 5th out of 28 Division III schools.  Great job, Cavaliers!  Thank you for representing CBA well this year.

On this date in 1806, right about now United States Army Lt. Zebulon Pike was leading a survey party across the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territory when he spotted a snow-capped mountain rising above the prairie in the distance.  The mountain, referred to by the native Ute Indians as “the long one” would be named after Lt. Pike.  Pike’s Peak or Bust became the slogan for many wagon trains headed west in the 1800’s, and in 1883, inspired by the view from the summit, Katherine Lee Bates, a teacher in Colorado Springs, wrote America the Beautiful.

On this date in 1918, the Great War, known to us as World War I, came to an end with the signing of an armistice at 11:00 a.m. on this, the 11th day of the 11th month.  Today was declared a national holiday by Congress as a recognition of World War I, but as America fought more wars and more Americans died defending freedom, Veterans Day has become a time to remember all the wars and the sacrifices of all the men and women who have served in America’s Armed Forces through the years.

Today’s date also marks the anniversary of the Pilgrims arriving in America and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in 1620, which gives thanks and Glory to God and dedicates this new land to the advancement of the Christian faith.  The Mayflower Compact played an important role in the developing of our Constitution.

On this date in 1605, Englishman Guy Fawkes was captured before he could blow up the British Parliament with 26 barrels of gunpowder he had planted below the buildings the night before.  Every November 5, Britain celebrates Guy Fawkes Day with fireworks to celebrate his failure to blow up Parliament and King James, who would go on to authorize the King James translation of the Bible.

On this date in 1845, the first baseball team in America was organized when Alexander Cartwright formed the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York.  At first, the club members would meet, choose sides, and play a pick-up game, but as other clubs formed in Brooklyn and Manhattan, clubs began playing each other and modern baseball was born.

On this date in 1999, an 18-month-old baby girl fell off a suspension bridge in Vancouver, Canada and fell 230 feet to a rocky ledge below.  The rescue team that descended into the canyon to retrieve her little body found her alive and crying.  She survived the 230-foot fall with some bruises but no broken bones or serious injury.  Doctors who examined her called it a miracle.  Today let’s celebrate God’s love and protection.

On today’s date in 1928, Scottish doctor Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, the world’s first antibiotic.  Alexander Fleming grew up in a very poor family but was able to get an education through scholarships paid for by the family of a boy his father had rescued from a peat bog…which is like quicksand.  Since 1928, many people who would have otherwise died from infection have been saved by penicillin – one of whom was Sir Winston Churchill, who was the Prime Minister of England who rallied his nation to resist the attack by Nazi Germany during World War II.  And it was Winston Churchill who as a boy had been rescued by Mr. Fleming from the peat bog and whose family had paid for Alexander Fleming to become a doctor.

On this day in 1456, the printing of the Gutenberg Bible was completed. Only 180 Bibles were printed, which would seem like a small run until you consider that the total number of books in all of Europe in 1456 was only about 30,000.  Of the original 180, fewer than 25 complete Bibles exist today.

This past June, Cavalier junior Lane Mangum lost his life in a boating accident while fishing on Lake Bistineau.  Today would have been Lane’s sixteenth birthday.  Please observe a moment of silence to remember Lane.
